I am running 23/40 gears with 8 tooth drivers on my 01 SRX. Does this put me lower or higher than stock gearing with 9 tooth drivers? Thanks! I have a gearing chart but the difference in drivers has me scratching my head.

Both of your changes result in lower gearing (lower theoretical top speed). Going from 9 tooth drivers to 8 tooth drivers has lowered your gearing and going from 23/38 gearing to 23/40 gearing has furthered lowered your gearing. Your stock gearing was 23/38 with 9 tooth drivers, to keep the same overall ratio with 8 tooth drivers would require something around 24/35.

I would be curious to know what type of clutch set-up would work well with such low gearing. You lowered your gearing by going to 8 tooth drivers and then further lowered it by going to 23/40 gearing. Sounds like a set-up for 600 foot drags (maybe even too low for that). What kind of weights, springs, and helixes are you using in your clutches so as not to over rev?

Thank you for the responses. When I purchased the sled it had 23/40 with 9 tooth drivers and I switched them out to 8 tooth anti-ratchet so I could fit a 1.25" iceripper. I thought 23/40 was higher than 23/38? I have been trying to clutch my way out of an over rev for 2 seasons now with heavy hitters. Well now it all makes sense!

Would 23/38 still be way too low with the 8t drivers? The max speed I can do on our trails is 70-80mph at best, corner to corner acceleration is much more important. Plus I would rather not spring for a new hyvo chain and gears.

23/38 gearing with 8 tooth drivers is the same as 21/39 or 23/43 gearing with 9 tooth drivers. That is still some pretty low gearing and would need a very aggressive clutching set-up to keep the rpm's down. Many members on this site would say to stay with 23/38 (9 tooth) gearing for all around best performance. I run 23/39 (with 9 tooth) and find it perfect, although I use an aggressive clutch set-up to keep the rpm's down. You will have a hard time loading the engine with such low gearing and the srx engine loves to be loaded as opposed to an over-rev condition. Other members on this site, may have a clutch set-up for you if you want to stay with 23/38 8 tooth gearing.

Thank you again, I did some searching on here and found the gearing chart for 8 & 9 tooth drivers.

my set up 8t 23/40 = 1.96
stock 9t 23/38 = 1.65
8t 24/38 = 1.79
8t 24/37 = 1.74

Looks like it's time to find some used gears, either way I can still use my 70L chain.

Im running 23/37 in my srx with 8 tooth drivers. Works out to 1.81 ratio. Kinda low, but works great in the trails. 24 tooth top gear would be ideal.

The easiest method i found to calculate 8 tooth ratio is to get the 9 T ratio and multiply by 1.125.

Ex. 37 divided by 23 = 1.608 ratio with 9T, 1.608 X 1.125= 1.809, or 1.81.
Hope this helps.
