i have a 1998 vmax xtc-p sled and the hand warmers don't work. I bought it from a guy that did choppy work with the wiring and need to redo it. I need to know what color wires do what and what not, but i have no wiring diagram. Also could i hook them up to a certain wire and have them work anyway? i have a toggle knob to turn it up and down, but again i need to know what color wires go from the adjustment to the actual hand warmers. Also where does the adjustment hook up to on the actual sled? On the stator or something? If you need anymore information please ask.

So i got this service manual from an sx 700 and looked at the wiring and stuff. everything seems to have power running to it. the yellow with the red stripe has power going to the hand warmer but not coming from the hand warmer to the black wire. i tested the black wire and that has power running to it. Is it the wrong black wire? So recap...power going to the right hand side but no power going to the left hand side so no power from the left hand side to the ground (black wire), but black wire has power to it when using a test light...weird

Time to test the resistance on each warmer. The manual should tell you what it needs to be. Sounds like one the warmers is shorted out and needs to be replaced. They are wired in series, so if one is bad they all will not work.

I used a test light and got power going to the hand warmer on one wire and then the other wire did not have current going to the other hand warmer. I even tried just hooking up 1 hand warmer and seeing if it would work but it did not. i put an ad up in the wanted parts section for hand warmers.....new ones cost like 60-80 bucks :s

I looked on the RSI web site and found just the grips for 20 bucks and the warmers for 50 bucks. Where did you go to get the grips? Would the hand warmers off of a sx viper work on a vmax? They are everywhere on the fourms.

That's what i am afraid i am going to have to do if i don't find another set on the classifieds section. I am just curious though, should the ground wire have power to it? Tested it out of curiosity with a test light and that lit up like the sun, maybe it is getting power from grounding something else in the sled. I also noticed that my thumb warmer is also not working...but is getting power, do i replace the whole throttle or what? what part do i replace for that?

If your getting power to the one and not getting powered out it sounds like its open. You also can't hook just one side up because there is not enough resistance so it wont get warm. Like sleddineinar said u need to check the resistance with both warmer hooked in series, if I remember right they should be 6ohms. Also the thumb warmer just sticks to the back side of the throttle and you can replace it if its bad. I'd also check if your actually getting 12 volts with a dvom and not a test light.

What does the term open mean though? For the thumb do you replace the whole trigger? Would a 2002 viper warmers fit on my 98 vmax?

That is what i am figuring what happened. Buddy just had his sled wrecked pretty badly, so might take his off his viper. Dunno though, i want him to fix it since he has a parts sled. 70 dollars for brand spankin new ones isn't to bad. Plus i want to get heated shield hooked up this season.

I had to replace the bent handlebars on my 99 VMAX. Replacement used bars had grips already on. Turns out that the left side was open circuit. Right side and both originals were in the 3.5 - 3.8 ohm range. Drilled out the rivets, easy swap, and I have a spare.

turns out what happened was the warmers where aftermarket and the wire inside the grips got to hot and severed the connection. Ripped off the ones from my buddies part viper and plugged right in. Hands are warm now :3 Now to find an area for the shield to hook up.
