Hey guys took the ol girl out to fernie bc this weekend and not such a good turn out. After hearing some banging and rubbing I determined the bearing on the jack shaft on the clutch side was completely gone. Any body know much about changing these out ? Also what would cause this just the year of the sled or something more I should look for? Also it has a dropped and rolled chain case which puts the shaft below the tunnel right in front of the track. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Also on the same issue does anyone know how much play there is suppose to be on the secondary clutch I have about 1/2" and am wondering if this has anything to do with the bearing going or if this is even the right amount of play?

same procedure for any bearing replacement regardless of the drop and roll. if your eating bearings, there is always the possibilty of some bad measures from whoever did the d&r. no real way to tell until both the drive shaft and jackshaft are out.
1/2" in and out , up and down, or forward and back on your secondary? up and down would be the bearing, in and out would be the lack of shims and more than likely ok, forward and back i would be looking at the chain and gears as thats about twice what i would call acceptable.

Ok the procedure you speak of is what im not sure about I have a parts sled and started tearing it apart lastnight and I just dont know how to get the shaft out and the bearing off. Does the jackshaft need to be removed from the sled entirely? It seems as though the plastic will cause an issue and be in the way. Is there a procedure on here somewhere for what you have to start removing first?

Tear it down and inspect replace all drive bearings. (if it was me)
Step 1 Remove the rear suspension.
Remove Secondary Clutch.
Remove Chain case cover.
There is a starting point. I dont think you can replace that bearing with out removing the drive shaft.
Just read a thread where people state that you can remove with out removing the suspension etc. I just think it is easier and gives you the chance to check for other issues while you are in there. Good Luck

if its a normal jackshaft, can be removed without yanking skid.... remove chaincase and secondary and airbox.
Its a collared bearing with 2 small allan set screws! the new bearing will not come with those screws so be sure to ask / keep you old ones. similar to the speedo bearing on the drive shaft, but I believe this has curved race on the bearing...and gets sandwiched between 2 brass mounts that bolt through bulkhead

Ok keep I mind my jack shaft is not under my air box it is below the tunnel in front of the track right in front of the rad. Do I need to remove the jack shaft from the sled completely? After removing the chain case cover then what do I do? I don't see why I need to remove the drive shaft or the skid from the sled? Is there a reason why the suspension would need to be removed? Which side of the sled do I pull the jack shaft out at? Thanks for all the help guys maybe I'm just struggling with this because I've never done it but I still don't really understand how to replace that bearing

What do you mean it's under the tunnel? The jackshaft is on top of the tunnel under the airbox, the driveshaft is under the tunnel. A rolled chaincase moves the driveshaft down.Gerryjackman said:Ok keep I mind my jack shaft is not under my air box it is below the tunnel in front of the track right in front of the rad. It's actually dropped and rolled it puts the jack shaft about 2 or 3 inches lower which places it underneath the tunnel right in front of the rad in front of the track it seems weird but is true if I ever get this picture thing figured out I will post some. Anyway does anybody know if the disc for the brake on the jack shaft actually comes off the shaft or how to remove it? And how do you stop the rear skid from pulling back when you remove the chain case ?
Thanks again guys really appreciate it

Is there anywhere in this site that would give me torque specs on the secondary clutch and the nut on thenjackshaf inside the chain case and also the bolt that holds the lower gear in the chain case or just a general spec sheet with torque specs for 1998 mountain srx 700

are you sure your jackshaft is running through the tunnel? i have a drop and roll on my srx and the jackshaft isnt inside the tunnel, but just above. my d&r moved the shaft back and down slightly the driveshaft moved as well.
just for clarity, the brake disc and secondary clutch are attached to the jackshaft. i would be curious to see how yours was done if in fact the jackshaft is running through the tunnel. thought i had seen them all. apparently not that one.

I'm not sure how to explain further but the tunnel top right below the air box is where the jackshaft would sit on a stock application actually under the good inside, mine is below the tunnel right below the air box so most of the jackshaft is visible if looking underneath the sled right in front of the track and between the rad. I finally got the jackshaft out to find that they gave me the wrong bearing to replace I need a tapered one and the one supplie is a straight
