Hello, I'm changing the drive shaft bearing on the speedo side of a 2000 SXR 600. I was able to get the C clip out on the chain case side and now I'm trying to get the chain case bearing out. Any tips how to pop it out? Also, will I be able to squeeze the drive cog out without removing the suspension? Thanks

Yes u will need a metric bolt about 5 inches long tread in to shaft. U will have to use a big socket deep wheel to allow the the shaft to move against the bearing and pull it out of the chaincase.make sure the I'd is bigger than the bearing. U will have to use washers because the lower axel has short threads. Also u will have to remove the speedometer bearing and bearings covers to allow the shaft to move over to the chain case also loosen the suspension. I have a special tool I use for this. Call me if u need help and I can explain it. 616-318-4560

you dont need to take that bearing out, you can replace the speedo bearing w/o taking that side apart! take the meter cover off,,go under neath an find the two set screws on that bearing ,loosen and tap off the bearing!replace and tighten set screws ..pretty simple!

Don't forget to drill & install a zerk in the housing as long as it's out.

Already tried that and I'm not able to get the bearing off. The thing is rusted on there pretty good.

put some heat to it ..it will come ..i've done it

Easy

You've probably already taken the speedo housing off. If the bearing is siezed to the shaft (like the one I just did) then you just take a sharp chisel and go underneath there and chisel off the two rivets that are holding on the inner bearing collar. Once that is removed and you unbolt the chain case from the side and pull it back it will all come out as normal. Now you can get at the bearing with hear, or better yet a press or whatever. You can just replace the rivets that you chiseled off before you put it all back together.

Using this method there is no reason to take the bearing out of the chain case and there is no reason to remove the bearing from the speedo side. ;)!

because madmatt somtimes the bearing is rusted to the shaft.. of course you have never seen that! and i dont appreciate the attitude!!

Come on

Attitude? You need more broad shoulders.....please accept my apologies if that was really that offensive. Anyway......when you get it out he's right, it may be rusted or seized to the shaft depending on how long its been in there or how long you rode it with the bearing siezed. Once you get the shaft out you should be able to get it off. With the last one I did I simply put it in the press and pressed off the last driver and the bearing race....because the rest of the bearing was toast and fell apart. Once I got it out I pressed the driver back on and touched up the shaft with some emery cloth.

If you don't have a press or access to a press then use a torch if you want.....I'm just not as good with a torch as some people on this board obviously and I didn't want to risk getting the driver hot/melted or whatever. I have seen some people use torches in amazing places where I wouldn't dare!!

Think one of these would work?

Looks like a similar bearing, but looking at the dimensions those are all too small. the O.D. should be 52mm, the I.D. should be 25mm and I believe 15mm deep plus the collar. I know ALL BALLS and NTN both make these bearings, Ive always used the NTN without issues, they cost about $17 bucks CDN

Also for removing the bearing whats wrong with a 3 jaw puller? Thats what Ive always used, little bit of jig-a-loo and crank the puller on and she slides right off

Not to thread jack, but can this be done on a 1995 vmax 600? I also have a speedo thats not working. I dont know what to start checking but i am guessing its the bearing since it has about 4,000 miles. Do you have any pics on this? Is it ware that wire from the speedo runs to?

I dont know much about sleds but i am not scared to dive in and take things apart.

Any Help would be great i think il start my own thread to..

Yes it is where the speedo cable runs, should be in basically the same spot as the proaction sleds (under the secondary clutch). Yours i believe has bolts holding the speedo housing over the bearing, then once you have the speedo housing off there should be a big nut holding the axle in place then a washer then like another housing basically that should pull off. Then you should be able to get the bearing off, yours doesnt have a collar on the bearing it will look like an idler wheel bearing.
