Just got this sled for my girlfriend. Was my brothers sled, bought it for $1200. Had top end rebuilt 2,000 miles ago along with new bearings and bushings in chaincase/rear suspension, 141" track, updated axle, extroverts and updated steering column. Pretty much a new sled. Needless to say after ride of the season the clutch side piston ring caught a port and busted the piston and there are now pieces in the crank case. I'm not comfortable doing engine work so I brought it to my shop. He quoted me $1400 for new top end and crank bearings/seals replacement. I can't see putting that into the sled at this point. Should I part it out? Find a good motor (maybe swap it with a 700?). Looking for second opinions... Let me know what you guys think!

I have a 700 redhead out of an 01 sxr for $750 plus shipping if you are interested. I wouldn't pay the shop 1400 to rebild that engine. I'd find a used one or sell the sled

I saw that for sale. What else would I need to do the swap? Recoil, fuel pump, oil pump, carbs, airbox, ecu? Wire harness?

Sounds like you should find a Donor motor or a swap. You should be able to find one cheap. You might even find a little older seld for a few bucks. I just got mine for 600 $ its a 1995 vmax 600. Needs little things but runs great.

I'd have a hard time putting $1400 into that sled, but on the other hand if you have it totally rebuilt you know what you've got.
I just bought a '97 XTC 600 with 3300 miles for $900.

There should be no need to replace the crank bearings. Just flush the crankcase out and repair the top end. What else was he going to put in it? It should only need one piston and the cylinder repaired. That would not cost anywhere near that much.
Chances are the cause was from improper piston installation. Did the same guy do it the first time?
Take it somewhere else and get a second opinion.
