Anyody had this happen? My sled started missing, I shut it down, When I took the plug out it was smashed closed. Started to dis assemble and when I took the reed cage out, the metal flange that stops the reeds from opening too much was broke off at the base where the three screws hold it on. Of course it sucked it into the cyl and caused the piston, head, cyl etc to need repair/ replacing.
Upon checking the other cyls I found hairline cracks in three of the other stoppers.
I have beeen watching this site for years and I don't remember anyone mentioning this problem.
BTW, I have 18000 miles on a 1998 SRX

Had cracks in my 700 redhead ones years ago. When I ordered them from the dealer mine were the first ones they'd sold.

I have seen many cracks in them but never heard of any of them going into the motor.

Sounds like a vibration problem to me. Do you have access to any vibration analasis/accelerameter equipment?

I had that happen to my 99 sx but I had the reed stopper notched so I think that was part of the cause. Does a lot of damage though.

Danny Boy,
No I do not have access to one of those. I do agree with you that it is a vibration issue, but I also feel that with that many miles it is probably just fatigue. I have had the crank balanced and welded years ago and have not have any other vibration issues.
I thought i would post it for others to know about it and make it something they can check when they do their once over every year. For the cheap cost, it might be something that they might want to replace when they start getting up in miles.
Thanks for the input though....

This just happened to my 97 700sx too. The mag side top stopper broke off and went thru the case and cyl. Punched a dime size hole in the case below the exaust port (welded it and jb weld for extra insurance) I flushed the crank bearings (crank removed) I am about ready to put it back together as soon as I get a new piston, crank side seal, yama-bond and gaskets.......... ow yea and new reed stoppers! Hope she holds together!!
