Alright guys,
Going to be pulling off my chain case tonight to replace bearings and check out disc since I've got about a 1/2 of slop on the key front to back. Already have a new key if that's the problem. I'll be also replacing the speedo bearing. Read alot of posts on this but still a couple things I need to ask. First..... Gears, chain, caliper are off and left e-brake on. I don't need to pull my skid to remove chain case correct? I am curious whether the drive shaft will drop once I get the case off. And whether it'll be a bitch to line back up. I'll use something to prop it up if that's the case. I'm thinking once I get the new bearings and seals back in the chain case I'll bolt it up and then work on the speedo bearing. Piece o' cake right? yeah right... Thank god for beer.... Thank's for the help guys. I appreciate it.

Crank out all the tension in the track. This will help with the chaincase removal and assembly.
I usually have the skid out when doing this type of maintainence on the sled. It makes the driveshaft related work easier and it also a good time to check the bushings and bearings while its out.

Thanks for the responses guys.....
Came off no problem. Lower drive bearing was verrry rough, top shaft bearing still in good shape but changed it anyways obviously. Shouldn't take too long to wrap it up and onto speedo bearing. Woodstove goin, tunes crankin', wrenches and beer on a Friday night.

Wow we might be living parallel lives! I just got done feeding the kids supper (venison steak with mac & cheese) and am waiting for mom to get home so I can go out in my shop and replace my chaincase bearings. I already have it apart and got all my parts today. I was just debating whether to pull my skid or not but I have an M10 with 8 tooth drivers so I am going try to cheat and leave it in. Right now I am staring out the window like I am waiting for my prom date to show up. The heat is going and the music is on.....
You guys are making me feel like going out and look for something to fix on mine, sure I can find something.
Garage…wood stove…snowmobile maintenance … ahh life is good.

Well, everything went off without a hitch. None of the bearings gave me any trouble at all. Even the speedo bearing came right off. Brake rotor still has some play in it but I'm just glad the driveline is good to go now. I could feel every ball bearing in that lower chaincase bearing so it was only a matter of time till that left me on the side of the trail.
Bad news is, It rained basically all last night and that is certainly eating up the snow. Hopefully we'll be getting back to normal temps around here by the middle of next week.
How did you make out with your sled Vt Srx?

Glad it went smooth for you.
Rain has killed almost all of the snow here as well, and it has been ridiculously warm on top of that. Looks like this year might be worse than last. If the winters keep up like this I may get out of the sport altogether. I have an ITS connector less than 1/2 mile from my house that I can't even use due to lack of snow, and I can't stand having to drive 2 hours north just to go riding.
Sorry, just venting. I'm very disappointed with this season so far. Way too much work in preparation for the season and it looks like winter will suck again this year.

I hear ya Mark. Supposed to be warm for the next few days I guess. Hopefully the upcoming cold weather brings an active storm pattern. Fortunately, around here we still have a "ok" snow base, just hoping it doesn't completely disappear before we get some more.
I'm really trying to stay positive about this season because it IS alot of work and expense to get the sleds ready. Let's hope for the best!
BTW...Are you in southern or northern Maine?

I finally got out to the shop by 7:30 and finished up at 2 am. I wasted a lot of time screwing with the old bearing in the chaincase cover. I don't have an internal bearing puller so I had to make one. I was about to give up on my crude design when I tried one more tweak and it slid it right out. The best part was "hair of the dog" playing on the radio just as it slid out!
I am just waiting for a power valve and I will be ready for the first ride of the season Wed night. We have managed to hold on to most of our early season snow and this warm streak is going ruin some of the trails into the towns. I am fortunate to have the trail go through our field so if we gas up here and stay in the elevation the riding will still be pretty good. We have a really good base if we do get another storm.

I did all my chaincase bearings when I had my 01 SRX all apart and the easiest way to change the upper bearing in the outside case cover is to take a propane torch and heat around the outside of the bearing. What you want to concentrate the heat on is the aluminum, once you heat the case for a couple of minutes tap the case on the bench and the besring will pop right out.

I'm kind of in the middle - outside of Bangor. 45* here today with rain - all remaining snow is about gone.
