I have a 97 vmax 600 xt, I just finished redoing all bearings in the skid and clutch side of the drive/jackshaft, cleaned and adjusted carb to stock settings, new 1" camoplast energy track, I also changed the 4 main clutch bushings (installed by dealer), changed the rollers, weights were good, cleaned both clutches + scuffed up faces, I have a w-s-w primary spring with a red secondary spring at 50* twist 2-3.
I measured the springs before installing and the free length is still correct, my problem is Im engaging around 3500rpm, which seems a bit low. The belt is a brand new Carlisle Ultimax XS, its sitting even with the sheaves maybe 1mm under but these belts have the small blocks on the top side, should the top of the belt be even with the sheaves or should the bottom of the blocks be even with the sheaves?
The sled performs perfect otherwise, good back shifting and up shifting. Should I be checking engagement on the snow with me on the sled or with the track off teh ground?

Also I believe the weights are stock 8ab's but I will check tonight

Test in the snow with you on the sled, If its still to low you can either replace the primary spring or add some engagement shims for the spring.
Ok I was thinking it was possibly my secondary spring, and the shims your referring to are the shims that go in the back of the secondary??

engagement shims go on top of the primary spring.Put up to 3 engagement shims in the center of the primary spring cover, drop spring on top of that and then put all back on the primary and tighten up your 6 bolts. Each shim should raise engagement rpm by about 50 rpm..you can try just one first..or just change your spring with more force..
These shims are basically sane diameter as the primary springs...
try a y-g -y primary spring..that is what is in my sxr and engages around 4000. Preload on your spring is 35 kg,preload on the y-g-y is 40 kg force..should help

I am guessing there are about 1mm thick. You probably could make some out of some flat tin. They are about a 1/4" width on the ring..
Thanks, Ill try that and see how it is

found some here. The 3 I ordered from Royal Dist. in Ontario. They were tight to drop down, had to remove material on the inside of ring to get them to fall into place. The pic I have showing a ring with a open end on it is something I just found at home by fluke. That measures about 1/8" in width on the ring or about 3mm-4mm max.

I have a royal about 20min away, are they the ones they said are to be used with the comet clutches? I saw them in the catalog but I didnt know if the comet spring size would be close enough to the yamaha spring size to use these>?
