So after my wife melted down her center piston and reading that I need to raise the needles on the carbs I now have a question...Right now there stock (third groove with two washers under the clip) My question is how much should I raise them? One full groove? Fourth groove with both washers under the clip?? Also is it a good idea to turn the fuel screws out two full turns from lighted seated?

Thanks for helping, so from reading that post it looks like 3.25 is where there running them? So raising them just a quarter groove will help with burndowns? Is that enough u think? My wifes sled melted the center piston pretty good, just trying to stop this from happening again..FJViper said:

Yeah, that's where I have mine set and probably alot of other guys on here. It's just enough to richen up that circuit, I think( atleast for my riding) raising them any more would just be too rich in anything over 30 degrees. Check out the threads from Mr.Viper on needles. He really knows his stuff. Also, I added a rear SRX cooler and I think that makes a HUGE difference for keeping coolant temps under control. Was it a lean burn down?
Don't know what kind of rider your wife is but my wife is a casual trail rider on her Polaris and used to just hold the throttle at one position. I broke her of that habit and now she does really good at varying the throttle.

We were trail riding, 40mph was top speed of the day. Weather was 25 degrees and light snow all day, sled has a rear cooler on it and a opticool headgasket. I posted pics of pistons on here in my thread "base gasket question" and most seemed to think is was def lean. I read a lot on here and I know how to raise the needles, I was just not positive on how much to raise them..ty

if you know its going to be run at a slower pace because of the driver, it would certainly make more sense to richen up the sled then keep replacing pistons, cylinders and cranks. You NEED TO LOOK at the plugs and piston tops, WHILE she is out riding it, stop and pull the plugs, look at them. Theres bunchs of threads in the tech faq on how to read plugs and piston tops. If its lean..., raise the needle up some more.
If this was my 2nd time of repairing the engine, I would be set up rich on the needles more then likely youll need a 3.5 setting if she puts puts around on it alot. The gas differance used will be far cheaper then the engine parts needed to repair the engine.
