I've put on about 300 miles since I cleaned my carbs.

As its sitting with no snow And was sucking gas last ride about 5 mpg. I decided to pull carbs and clean out again.

When I pulled them everything sounded like it had grit in it especially when I unscrewed the main jets.

I found a greenish grey powdery sand like substance in the bottom of the bowls and caked on the mains. Any ideas what the heck this is? I ran 93 no ethanol except for 6 gallons of 87 blend when I couldn't find other fuel.

It's an 02 Viper with about 2200 miles. What I belive to be Hauck Cpr triples and Hauck clutch kit. Mains are 160 , 160 162.5. Pilots 47.5 x2 and 50 mag.
Needles are 4 slot one shim under x2 and two shims under on mag.

Anyone seen this powder before and anyway related to poor gas mileage?

Many thanks

I'll try and get some pics up. How would the piston dust get back into carb bowls?

Thanks an I really hope you're wrong :)

sounds to me like-the old gas that had the ethanol already did its magic,it was eating away at the aluminium-grey green sand -clean them, check your jets they are probablly plugged up too.pull your plugs and look at them, they may be on the lean side-near burndown...yet gas milage with triple pipes and fatter jets your around 5-8 mpg anyway, clutching affects milage too..and watch what boosters you use in your fuel some destroy your engine.and never use either~secret octane booster is moth balls :)

when i bought my sled all we had was 87 89 and 93 all with ethanol,i used the star- tron ethanol fixer(blue bottle) and ran 93 no issues.now we have 91 octane ethanol free been useing that and always have ran amsoil interceptor, power valves stayed clean and no carb issues, top my tank off at the end of the season use the star tron fire them all up once a month for about 20-30 minuets, when snow flys im good to go no issues.~smoke

I had a couple guys tell me it was due to ethanol. I didn't realize it was such bad stuff that a little would do this to my sled.

Plugs pto and mag are black and wet too rich. Center is black but dry. Not sure what that means but center is same color but no oily shine to it like the other two have. Center carb also had the most mystery material in it.

Thanks for the help guys.

check your oil cable~oem seem short-look at it and see if it appears pulled or is real tight~probablly running fat to keep it from burndown with the pipes,mr viper can lead ya in the right direction on proper jetting steps.

I finally had a chance to upload a pic of this stuff.

It's the consistency of talc once you scrape it off the metal.

One other clue, I did put a can of seafoam into a tank of gas while I was out riding. Would the seafoam have caused this gunk to come loose and sit in the bowls?

I rode about 250 miles this past weekend in Gaylord and she ran great.

I dont know what it is either, but i see it alot anymore. like you said if you scrsatch it off with a penlight screwdriver its like talcom powder. Obviously its some #$%&* chemical they added to the gas to cheapin it up and charge double for it..eating at the aluminum....lol :whine:

I sent some of the white gel I found in my carbs off for analysis but it'll be another few weeks before results are in. It seemed like some kind of paraffin.

I also looked a bit about the corrosive affects of E10 but have yet to find anything concrete with regards to aluminum. What little I read suggests the reaction with water excellerates the water's corrosive properties. Most agree that E10 alone isn't enough but the testing done found what was thought to be E10 was closer to 20% and as another mentioned, the pump isn't required to be labeled.

Stay tuned.
