I have a 2002 viper 700 and the speedometer is going crazy. I thought it was the battery so I tried a new atv battery to see if it would help but there was no change. I've heard the electric start models are sensitive about the battery. The whole unit (speedometer and tach) act the machine just started. It turns off and works for a couple seconds and shots down again and it does this over and over. I also noticed nothing happens when I try the electric starter. I've checked the connections I can find and everything looks good. I'm wondering if the starter solenoid could cause this ? I got it running great, but I'm not sure about the electrics in this machine. I guess the last question is will it do any harm to run it since it runs great. Thank you.

Search "speedo problems".
Most times once the battery is ruled out, you will find it in the wiring harness.
Search "rub throughs". Pretty common to find rubs in the harness under the engine and by the handle bars.
Dont panic. You can fish the harness out to check it and use a wrap to prevent future rubs.
I'm sure some Viper owners will chime in for ya.

Thanx for the quick reply. I did try searching for speedo problems, but I didn't see the same problems I had. I'll check the harness even closer.

well the atv battery must not be any good then, you need to buy a new correct sized battery for the sled. the e/r vipers need the battery to operate the guage and elec. start.
