Ya I know, kinda defeats the purpose, but I was just out for a run and even with my track wayyy to tight, the studs are still grazing the exchanger when I let off suddenly at speeds over 120kms or 80mph.
They are 1.5 inch studs from the previous owner. To long for the track and def to long for the srx.
I figure cutting them down and having some extra traction is better than no studs for aggressive trail riding.
Problem is getting them off for new ones next season.
Anyone had any experience with this? Any constructive advice?

Alot will depend on what they are made of and what type. If they are stainless....good luck! If your not concerned with destroying the studs you could hit them with a grinder still installed in track. Dont force the grinder into stud, let it eat its way down. This shouldnt effect removal later on as outer shank shouldnt have any threads on it.

I used a diamond blade on a 4 1/2 grinder on a couple and it cuts too wide a path and destroys the threads as it goes. I think I'll slip out and grab some fine metal wheels and have at it.
After thinking about it further, I think the roads I have to travel will round them off like I've seen in the past with well worn studs that were reduced to little stubs with no carbide left.
These are aluminum, not stainless. Cut like butter.

How far down are you taking them? 3/8 should be plenty....shouldnt be threads the first 3/8 of an inch...at least not on any studs I am familar with.

I just picked up a 15 pack of thin blades for a faster cut but there wont be any measuring going on. lol
Sleds in the porta-shop and itchin to go for a tear, so I'll be jacking it up with the ol' bumper jack, stuffing the flap into the tunnel and havin at er'.
No time for science, time to ride.
I'll post the results after a ride.
Thanks.

That was pretty painless. About ten seconds per stud. The tips of the stud roll off the edge so you have to use some pliers to snap them off.
Hopefully I can get out tomorrow for a test run.

Worked like a charm so far. Couldnt get to top speeds even on a road. Just too much snow. 160kms per hour and no problems though.
