So after the recent lean burndown on my wife's 02 Viper, I decided to take a closer look at my 05 Viper (which I recently picked up) just so I don't end up with similar issues. This Viper is not stock with SLP pipes, 151 track, and aftermarket clutches from what I can tell (maybe more though). It runs great but I haven't added any octane booster since I started ridding it about two tanks ago. So here are some snap shots of the cylinders starting with the mag side (#1) , then #2, and then #3 which appears to be more washed out than #1 & #2. Just so we are clear all three pictures were taken with the same orientation (exhaust at bottom of pic and intake at top).

And here is a shot of the spark plugs laid out for cylinders 1,2,3 from left to right. By my eye they all kind of look fouled with the center one looking the best.

Thisis the first time I have looked at the plugs so who knows how long they have been in there.

I just pulled off the carbs and cleaned everything. Nothing was too clogged (i.e.- pilot jets) so I think we are okay there.

Anyway, any input on why the PTO cylinder would be washed like this and should I be worried? Any adjustments I should make to be safe?

By the way, here are my current carb settings:

Main - 155
Pilot - 52.5
screw - 2 turns out
needle - 3.0

Thanks!!!

lol, from one extreme to the other.
from either set of pics I can tell you you have more than enough wash if it's washed clean to that point of the piston top. what comes in to question what throttle circuit were these readings taken?

I do mostly trail riding out here in California, so most likely in the middle of the throttle the majority of the time. Would that be on the needle circuit or the main jet circuit?

Any input from the experienced ones here? I really appreciate all of your help and I feel I am learning more and more about these Yamaha 2 strokes every day. This site is great! Hopefully I can get my sleds reliable and avoid any future burn downs.

Thanks in advance for your insight!

honestly, if you didnt pull those plugs at any 1 throtlle setting they dont give you accurate informstion because you overlap all the carb circuits and messes up the reading. So for instance if you wanted to check the mid range where most all vipers are lean, youd need to drive the sled at half throttle for a good 800-1000ft,shut it down and pull the plugs and look at piston tops. Then wide open for a good 800+ft to get a idea what your main jet is doing.
