Somebody out there has to have the time/connections and the inclination to do this...I'd buy one of these in a heart beat...imagine if it was factory installed...

Just an idea...what if a small sensor (even GPS based, like Lo-Jac)was developed that could sence any movement of you sled and/or any tampering with the unit...and alert you whereever you are..like the things at restaurants that tell you when you table is ready. If a GPS style was used it could track the movement and location of that unit. Each unit could have a code or serial # to prove ownership. You'd be able to turn it on and off and the alarm could fit on a key chain or your pocket.
No one should screw with your sled when you not around...so this will tell you if anyone is sitting on it or otherwise....get my drift. Why not...sounds like a money maker to me. This sensor/unit would be useful on any investment, Motorcycles, ATV's, Trailers etc... It wouldn't be expensive either cuz, the technology is already here. I would think about the same cost as a decent GPS unit..200-400 bucks. I probably just gave away a million dollar idea, but something like this could drastically reduce insurance premiums across the board. Not like I have any money to buy product patents...lol

actually, it's called Lo-Jac or Onstar and works well today. But, for smaller items you would need a GPS reciever and a cell phone if you wanted to use it yourself. The cell phone could be programmed to call you at 10min intervals and speak the Lat/Lon to you or even do a text message to your cell with the lat/lon and current speed (it would be in the $500.00 range). I like the idea of a 100,000 + volt static shock that tosses a solid 6" spark to the thief. It won't kill him but it sure does get his attention. It's harmless and it works off of batteries. If you have electric start yhat battery can produce some wicked voltage if pumped into a pulse/switching circuit and run through the correct coils. I used to make these things in electronics class, for some in-house fun. It would also notify you if you were in the bar and some guy was stealing your sled. The awesome amount of RF energy given off would cause the radio and TV signal to go full static for a brief sec. Alerting you to a possible problem in the parking lot. It's called a Tesla coil and boy would that be fun. Doug

some poor guys could've used it last weekend in fredric, mi when their two cats got stolen out a bar. hey at least they were cats

i cant remember the date but telemarketers are going to be able to call cell phones. also new cell phones are supposed to have tracking devices in them for parents or whatever to see wehre their kid is. that might work. put it in the pocket of the sled or something. then you know if someone is using your phone or stealing your sled lol

no sure of the date but this was on my credit union website
"In a few weeks, Cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls."

Call this number from your cell phone
1-888-382-1222.
It is the
National DO NOT CALL list.
It blocks your number for five years

also go to this website to block 3 numbers at a time: https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx

I heard about those guys in Fredric...Plus a bunch of other stories, that's what made me think of this. Oh and ny_sxr700...good input, but would it be a lot more simple then answering or tracking your cell phone every to min.??? Your idea would still allow the sled to be taken then your tracking it...I hinted to that as a more advanced version. Plus what if you don't have service? I understand that there's Lo-jac (as I mentioned), but I'm talking about a very simple device that could be stuck in anything that will dectect tampering and/or slight movement.... immediately....then you just hear a beep/vibration or illumination of some sort from you key chain or what not. Simplicity is the key. need to keep charges and weak links like cell service out of the equation. I don't know of anything like that...

maybe not sophisicated enough, but I have installed a hidden switch that merely opens the circuit to the ignition coils of my sleds... the wiring can be tampered with and ground removed from CDI and unit will still not start... Not a tracking device but still a little piece of mind...

tj...

Ohhh I am sorry now I understand and since I have insurance and either way they are going to get a call from me (stolen or totalled). So here is a new idea, now that you have pointed out, "that will dectect tampering and/or slight movement.... immediately....then you just hear a beep/vibration or illumination" I like to call my new idea Mercury Switch... hahahaha yes it gets attached to about 4 ounces of C-4 (you are notified by a small vibration in the earth up to 100 yards away, you might hear a beep or your ears will be ringing and you will see a flash of light). When I park the sled I set the "alarm" and when some thief trys to take my toy KABOOOOOOOM the "alarm" goes off. Here is the good part, if he stole it, I would be calling my insurance Co. With my new alarm we have a dead thief <good thing, I like them that way> and a totalled sled. I still get to call my Insurance Co. and tell them some crazy maniac put a package in my sled and blew himself up in the process. I like this one.... doug

Guys there is a paging device out there. You install this on your sled, it is self poweredand if someone tries to move or start your sled your mini pager will beep. You have to be within a few hundred feet of the sled for it to work.
I tried selling these to sledders in my area a few years ago and nobody wanted one.

Hey Doug you've got an undisputable way of taking care of the theives...LOL Now where do you get the C-4?? Yamyrider where can i check this paging device out?? Sometimes the first go around with a product doesn't work...There may be a lot more demand for that here in MI. I'm hearing about peoples' sh...stuff getting stolen all the time.

you have to have some source of electricity (battery), but there are tons of alarm systems for motorcycles that would work perfectly on snowmobiles. And trust me, from experience, alarms may not sound very intimidating being every car has one now a'days, but it saved my motorcycle once from being stolen. The real main point is that you are making your sled more of a pain in the *** then the next guys sled, and no one wants to draw attention to themselves when stealing something and will hopefully just move on to the next sled. I'll see if I can pull up the link for the one I have on my bike and others.
