I have a 1987 Vmax and noticed that I can't keep the gearcase oil filled
I noted that after I filled it and ran the engine the sled smoked more than usual indicating its sucking up the oil.
I further verified this by pulling the oil level indicator when running and noticed the rpm picked up quite a bit...
What to I need to look for/replace...
I have a post about this on vintagevmax.com as well
THANKS!

You need to pull the engine and replace the Crank case seals. The Mag side crank seal is leaking and that is where your gear oil is going, hence the excessive smoke. When you take the dipstick out it causes an air leak that is why the engine picks up rpm's. Do yourself a favor and get a gasket kit and fix it before you loss the engine completely.
