How do I test a stator?

A new stator is $180 (97 sx700) can anyone walk me through how to test the old one. I have no spark, and there is no return on electrical parts so I would feel better if I could test it. Thanks.
 

Do you have an ohm meter and can you use it? You will need that first. If you do I would bet my Yamaha bible has the readings you need. Or someone else here will post the reading from wire to wire. In your case it should be easy to tell if your's is dead. One of your coil windings is shorted or open (it won't start so it's dead now. Some die after they heat up.). Your meter will show 0.00 for short or ------- for open. The hard part is what color wire to what other wire to get it right. Doug
