i was up riding this past weekend and i looked down at my speedo and it was not working so i stopped to check it out and after trying to diagnose it on the trail we found out that everytime i hit my brakes the gauge cluster would go blank and recycle and come back on. later in the day flipped my brights on and it would do the same thing then i turned my hand warmers on and all my lights would get real dim. i was told it could be the stator but the sled ran great all weekend even after the electrical issues i was also told it could be the rectifier regulator or a bad ground. i checked out all the wires unplugged the break light switch to see if that was it and still had the same thing. cant find anything never had this problem with any sled just trying to get some advice and see if anyone else has had this problem.

Welcome to the site. It sounds like a wire harness rub through, very common on vipers. Do a search on "viper harness rub through" ect.... You will have tons of reading to do. But in short pull the harness from under the engine and put a string around end of it so its easy to pull back through and inspect. Just unplug at the hood harness and pull through from carb end. You will need to pull air box and carbs to make it easy. Check under handle bar pad also and around steering stem. Where you at in michigan? Chris

Same thing happened to my 04 viper mt and it was the stator
Yeah I checked as many wires as I could I pulled the tail light and the seat didn't find any rub throughs there. I checked under the handle bar pad and found nothing and yesterday I pulled the air box to check and checked all around the regulator and did not see and rub throughs. Is there anyway to test the stator to see if that's it? I'm for Goodrich just south of Davison chris
Mine did that to. It was my stop switch assembly, #23 under break in parts. Unplugged it under my handle bar pad and it stopped flickering when I touched my break. Hooked it back up and it started doing it again go right blank. Id check that also
Yeah I did that to and it worked for when I hit the breaks but when I switch hi lo beams it does the same thing and when my Hand Warner's are on everything is really dim

Hmm still sounds like rub through. Only way to really know is pull that harness.

ya need a new stator
I would suggest since your gonna be working on it you do the wiring harness under the engine as if its not bad now it will be! they all do it sooner or later so its a preventative fix, theres a million post on how to repair it and place it in convolute tubing.
buy only a oem yamaha stator the aftermarket ones are JUNK, or youll do the job twice...been there, done that!

Just had the same exact problem and put a new stator on it and the problem was fixed
