Hey guys, I am tinkering on a vintage project that I want to put a slide rail in and twin sprocket drive. I have an 88 Exciter suspension that needs some work, but it seems quite heavy. I have been told to use a Phazer skid, but from looking at the pictures of the two, the biggest difference that I can see is that the Exciter has heavier springs. I'm looking for ways to lighten it and I was wondering if Phazer springs would fit on it and what other differences there are? Which is the better skid to use? Thanks.

Im not sure of any weight differece or other gain by using a phazer skid. I have had all years exciters and a few phazers and the skids very similar. (except for the 91-93 exciters). My guess would be you would have to use a phazer II skid if you were dead set on going that route. Reason being that phazer II's run a 121'' track. I dont know if that would be a direct bolt up or not. Im sure some on else on here could chime in and tell you tho. Personally I would just run the exciter skid or find another skid thats way better if you deciced not to. Maybe an M10 or newer proaction. IMHO. Good luck with your project.

Thanks. An M10 would be good, but too tall for that old leafer. I want to go 121 so yeah, Phazer II, I understand that. I could use any skid I wanted actually as I have to drill the holes anyway. I just don't know what the best skid to use is! Light enough for a 350 lb sled, and smooth as I can get with Yamaha quality. I really don't want to use the Exciter skid if I don't have to.

Ok, gottcha. I was asuming you had an 88 Exciter. What sled are you working on?? Or is that top secret custom? LOL.

A custom 69 YAMAHA. Not enough there to restore so......

Awesome! Pics are definately in order. I think you answerd your own question about the skid. The phazer skid may be a good choice as it may be calibrated better for your project. Being the phazer is lighter than an exciter. Although its not yamaha, have you thought about maybe an Indy skid?? There are a million of those sleds from the 80's and early 90's that have been parted out. At the swap meets it seems you cant go ten feet without seeing polaris parts for sale. The reason I think it may be an attractive choice would be the ride height and having a better (more level) stance indicitve of a vintage sled. Im thinking you may want to consider that the phazer may give you too much lift in the rear and make the sled dart everywhere. Just a thought, as Im thinking aloud.
I totally understand wanting to keep it all yami tho. So... when are the pics come'n?? lol

I have not given an Indy skid any consideration due my experiences. I used to have an 83 V-Max and my brother-in-law bought a new 92 RXL. The V-Max rode waaaay better than the RXL and did not kick back of small bumps near as much. So due to that, I have never considered Polaris stuff, that and there is the YAMAHA thing to consider.

Also, the front will be raised somewhat, at least a half in longer spindle tubes on the bottom and custom front suspension I am working on(not shown) that will provide some height and more travel. The Alouette design gave me an idea! Team blue with Tri-white clearcoat metallic on top with white 1/8 pin, then red, then black in honor of the older colors. My own custom decals and of course the requisite 433 with a custom built single pipe and twin carbs. Sending a MO today for the carb adapters. Enjoy the pic, she don't look like that now!

Thats gonna be bad azz!!!! I cant wait to see the finished product.
I was thinking about your rear skid issue today. If you were to use the phazer skid, you could always suck up the limiter straps to get the desired ride height. As far as the polaris comparison, you are dead on. My bro has an older indy and that thing pounds the living hell out of you. If you ride a yami of the same vintage, you will definately be more comfy. One thing that definately separates the older polaris' from the yami's is that the seats are so damn hard on the poo's compared to the yami's.
Cool project you have going. Keep the pics come'n!

I'd love to provide more pics, but I'm just gathering parts right now. Aside from the suspension, I have a lot of what I need but am missing the most worry-some piece, the front bumper! Building the 433 right now, sent funds off for the carb adapters today and am busy drooling over Lectron carbs at the moment....lol Wish me luck on those!!!

When I have enough done I will probably start a thread on the build.

Exciter II 93

Hi.
Does anybody know were i can get bushings for my sled. A complete kit would be best tough. And some idler weels, measured the weels to 160mm but they are probably a bit worn down. Also at what position should the jet needle clip be on a std setup. Thanks
