My brother's steering post broke on his SRX last weekend on our trip. Thankfully he wasn't moving when it broke, or it could have been really bad. The post broke clean just below the handle bars.

What are our options for getting it fixed? Can it be welded or have a sleeve welded to it? If we do have to replace it does the engine have to be removed to change the post?
Thanks Matt

ya that's where they almost always break. I bought mine that was re-welded in the exact same spot...guy did a crappy welding job too, far from straight. you can re-weld it if you want with or without a sleeve. and I believe the engine has to be removed or at least moved forward enough to get at the link underneath of it. theres plenty of posts on this problem.

Personally I would sleeve it if your going to fix Find a peice of pipe/round stock that fits inside nicely and weld away. Can be welded with it still in the sled but is a dicey route as your gas tank and gas vents with gas lines to carbs/pump right below.....hot slag spark...litterally a burn down in the making.

Definetly pull motor and do correctly. I learned the hard way on this one. Tried welding on sled and didnt hold and ended up crashing my pristine sx. So take motor out it dont take that long really and that way you can get post out and get good penetration. I sleeved over the steering tube. That way you can get a bead on top and bottom of sleeve and then put your mounting plate back on and you can weld all the way. I also put small gussets on sleeve and welded to plate. May sound a bit over kill but they should never come off again. Pretty helpless feeling when your going into curve and your bars come off. Wouldnt wish it on anyone. Do a search on "fixer upper" and you will see the result of not doing it correctly

I would or will weld it on the sled for you.Fist off with the bars and cables and wires unplugged and everything out of the way.Welders blanket over the tank, next a piece of sheet metal with a hole cutout over the pipe.

Grind the pipe leval and insert a pipe inside a couple inches long and leave it out a little.Do a nice weld on this than cut out the metal inside the plate that will go over the top.Keep it straight and do a nice bead on that.

This way you can see what you are welding and will have a better job done in the end at about a 6th of the time it takes to undo the moter/pipes and everything else.Any sparks will run off the sheet metal to the floor.

A full gas tank with a sheet of plastic under the gas cap keeps your mind at ease with any gas fumes.

Now is the time to make the steering post longer... If your brother wanted or pondered adding a handlebar riser...
