I just had the best afternoon dialing in the daughters XTC 500. I had, in a previous year, dropped gearing to 21/39 and added some weight to the weights to bring the rpms down to the 7700 to 7800 goal. Also using VmaxJohns secondary setup. It ran fine but, kind of doggy backshift & heavy snow would bring rpms down too low, like 7400. We mostly trail ride so top end is not the biggest concern. I now dropped the gearing down to 20/39, Helped some. Next changed primary spring to WSW for 5 more kg of preload. This helped some more. Really has not changed things dramatically, but definitely 2 steps in the right direction. RPMs are now pretty stable at 7800. There is about 4" of snow here. Not enough to really ride much. Just enough to test on my dead end gravel road. To this point my top speed for these conditions has been about 93 on the speedo. I'm thinking this is fair, I'm out of gear at 20/39, but it is a good tradeoff for the type of riding we do. Just on a whim I thought I would throw on a roller secondary I had tried out on my viper that did not really work out as good as a standard type. What a strange, unexpected difference. The backshift is incredibly better. That seems to make sense. Standstill acceleration seems to be at least as good as it was, if not better. Difficult to verify with knowbody to run against. The odd part that I welcome is the extra 5 to 6 mph I gained on the top end. This was repeatable. This thing just went 99 mph on the speedo with these lower gears at the same place it could only manage 93mph 15 minute earlier. The other odd thing is that in the process of doing this it has brought my shift rpm up to an initial 8200 eventually settling down to just above 8000. Number One - I know the added side pressure from the strong roller secondary spring is suppose to hurt top end. Number Two - I know these little 500s are suppose to run best between 7700 & 7800 rpm, not 8000 to 8200. I guess I don't really care why. I just know it was a nice noticable change. The best top off to the whole day was that the only other two sleds I saw was (you guessed it) an Artic Cat being towed buy a Yamaha. It just doesn't get any better than that. Sorry for the long post. I just had too much fun today.
