ok, so on my vmax i can basically burn my thumb off, but desire more heat on my hands, i noticed the newer proaction sleds have a control for hand and thumb. is there a way to retrofit this onto my sled?
my '97 sx is like that too, blistered my thumb with thin gloves so I just wrap the thumb now...it is awkward though with just one super hot mode.
Yes it can be done. You will need to piggyback the wires from the hand warmers to break up the circuit and then run that wire to your second potentiometer which will be your thumb warmer. I still need to do this on my Sxr(already bought the parts)... on the '01 I believe is when yamaha broke the circuit up to do exactly what you are asking.

I currently just hang onto the very end of my throttle to keep from burning my thumb.

Another easy way to fix this I came about by chance is to put viper grips on. The vipers ohm out about double of the older style grips. In a series vipers are about 3.7 and older grips are about 6.8. So viper grips will put about twice the heat. So now on my 98 xtc with viper grips it evens out with thumb warmer. Control at about half is hot hands and thumb equal. Not cold hands and smoking thumb.
I would be careful adding more load to the system. The single rheostat system draws power directly from the stator or load center. Adding another rheostat will increase the resistance in the system thus more load.
The sleds with seperate adjustments (potentiometers) work differently. These send a resistance value to the CDI and then the CDI sends out the corresponding voltage to th grips and thumb warmer.
These sleds also have a higher output stator than the older Sx with the single bulb.
This was the info that I got when I asked the same question a few years back.
After working on both my Viper and 97sx it seemed to be correct in the way the two systems worked

More than half the time I forget I even have them on my sled! I think I only used them once last year and that was when it was -21*out. And still only had them half wy turns up. Am I the only one? I guess the hand gaurds I have on mine help a bit.

could i just add a resistor on the thumb warmer?
