I took the carbs off today to clean them and when I started it up the sled ran like a beast. I then noticed the speedometer was at zero the entire time. It worked fine before the carb removal.

The drive axle bearing seems to be intact. How does the speedo work on the viper? Could it be a sending unit? What are the signs of the bearing going bad? Is there anything else I should look for? Everything else electrical seems fine including hand and thumb warmers. Planning on going North next week and would like to resolve before I leave.

Check to make sure you have what looks like a small gear bolted to the end of the driveshaft, and then right beside it (to the rear) is a black plastic speed sensor with wires coming out of it. There should be a small air gap between the gear and the sensor, I'm not sure of the spec but seems that anywhere close but not touching would be fine.

If your bearing does go out, or start to wear out so that the driveshaft wobbles some, the gear could hit the sensor and break it or wear away at the sensing face, so keep a close eye on the bearing and these parts. Might be a good idea to remove the outer bearing retainer and then pick out the bearing seal to have a look at the innards of the bearing. If dirty or dry, clean it out as best you can and repack with fresh grease.

You can see what these parts look like by checking the online microfiche parts diagrams available on dealer websites as well as Yamaha's website. You may have to check a couple different diagrams to see all the parts.
