Was riding Saturday and the machine just died...it would start up, but then would sputter and stall. plugs looked good, and it just doesn't seem like a fuel delivery issue. I am ameteur when it comes to diagnosing electrical problems, so I don't know where to start. I did read about the wiring harness under the motor issue some vipers had, are these symptoms a sign of that? One side note-when the hood was up, sled would idle, then when closing the hood, it started sputtering and would stall-not sure if that matters or not. Thanks in advance for any suggestions...
Are you certain it would idle with the hood up, but stall when it was closed? Is that consistent?

Well, after inspecting it for a few minutes with the motor running, it started to act up with the hood open as well.....The main wire that runs up to the dash pod seems to be in good shape. When it goes from a steady idle to the sputtering, the speedo shuts off, just like it's being shut off from the kill switch. Giving any throttle doesn't matter, it just dies.

more then likely the wire harness under the engine is rubbed thru and arcing to ground/frame.

Agreed. That is why I was wondering if you were certain the hood open and closed was truly making a difference.
I had an SRX do the same thing you were saying when the harness under the engine wore through. It's not a bad fix, do some searching on here and there is a pretty good write up on it.
i found on mine that was haveing simmiar problems,was the main plug from the stator has one wire ripped apart,take your airbox off and look at all the connections,youll find a broken wire under that boot.and it gives you all sorts of issues,i used butt connectors and then heat shrinked it. so far so good,but make sure your connections are good before you heat shrink them,i had zip tied them to the coolant pipe above and below all the plugins,bumpy agressive trails musta gave no give for movement along with the airbox cramming up tight to the wires and just broke jmo~smoke
i had speedo on ,then went out ,headlights dim ,ran great then like junk i was like uhhh,broken wire under the protective rubber boot,just off the stator,i even shut the lights off to see if anything arced and nothing.when 2 nights prior to my trail ride she was perfect!!! even wasted $20 on a new relay-forgot to say after butt connection and heat shrink i also used black tape~smoke ,all your connections start there so go there first,then plug and unplug will narrow down witch wire set is bad.then you can trace it.also found when i lifted the hood lights got brighter and when i hit the brakes lights dimmed and dash went out lol-its good to check too i also found thet the reason it does that is because they never grounded the aftermarket plugin for the heated visor witch is powered by the taillight.lol hope i helped~smoke
