I have a 1996 VMax 600 2up that appears to be wearing the belt on one side. I only got one chance to ride last year by trailering up north and I noticed fibers flying around. I pulled the primary and secondary and all appears fine, offset and center line is also fine. Also motor mounts are all solid, tried moving the motor and each mount with a pry bar and nothing moves. Maybe the secondary sliding sheave was corroded from sitting and not moving.

I am thinking maybe 500 miles on the belt (2011 season), the last belt that went did not wear this way and it took out my speedometer cable so guessing on mileage. I only rode it for a few miles last time (2012) when I noticed it eating the belt.

Everything appears to be OK, so I am just going to flip the belt and do a test run and see if it still wearing this way. Just looking for ideas on what else to check so I can start riding again, we are finally getting a base here, and thinking about going north again.

The first picture shows the side of the belt has a slice in it, and the third picture you can see a line running down the same side which is the sliding secondary side.

I would say a few minutes with a green scotch brite pad would help those sheeves...looking pretty grubby. Did you wash the belt prior to putting it on? Some say hot soapy water to remove and dirt/oil prior to new belt install. I picked up a 95 vmax 600 a few years ago that had weird belt wear and upshifted very irregularly. Popped the primary off and cleaned and lubed everything....Made a 100% improvement on shifting and belt wear.

Thanks for the reply.

I did not wash the belt, was out riding when last belt went, and put the new belt on and continued riding. Everything cleaned up nice so I think it's fine, will test on Sunday with same belt turned around to see if it has the same problem and pay attention to any shifting issues.

Wanted to post back to help future searchers.

Just needed cleaning, the secondary sliding sleeve was not sliding due to rust/corrosion. Easy fix, and got a few hundred miles on it since.

Thanks

Not to hijack, but the strangest thing happened with my buddy's 2000 SX700R last Thursday/Friday. We were riding pretty hard, and I caught a couple of whiffs of burning rubber, and thought it was my sled. We stopped at the next intersection, and I gave mine a once over. All good.
We swapped sleds for a bit because he wanted to check out how mine felt after my recent adjustments. I was following him and every once in a while I caught the whiff of burning rubber, then it went away.
Next day during pre-flight, I made him go over his sled like he should(I'm much more anal) and what he found was a thin layer, with the top cogs peeled right off and were laying in pieces in his pan. Otherwise the belt was perfect except the outside couple mm that had peeled off. Never seen that happen before.
Said he was getting pelted the day before with what he thought were feathers, and just thought he hit a bird or something, Must have been the cords, lol.
It was an 89L.
WTF?
