Curious.....
I found a SMOKING DEAL on a complete set of 04 Viper take off shocks. Like too good to be true type of a deal. Like a good enough deal you'd feel like fool if you DON'T buy them if they could be of any use to you someday sort of deal.
I also read somewhere that in 04, Yamaha had the shocks figured out as good as they could get them for the Proaction Plus skids.
So.....My questions are:
1.) Will they bolt right in?
2.) Were the 04 shocks any different than 00-03?
3.) Any advantage to Viper shocks over shocks in an 01 SX7R?
If yes is the answer to the questions above, I will buy them just to have sitting on the shelf in case I ever need them.
Thanks,
~G.D.

Maybe someone can verify it, but to my knowledge, they are the same shock, maybe just revalved. Unless you are talking Ohlins on the 04.
Not Ohlins from the pics, but they only supposedly have 150 mi in them for $150. If they will bolt right in, or are as good, or better than what's in the 01 SX7R, I'll just buy them just to have them.

I may be wrong but it seems to me the fronts mount differantly. I am only 60/40% sure of this. Maybe check parts fische? Seems foolish to me to buy upgrade parts for a sled you dont own yet. Maybe when you find the SxR your looking for it may already have upgraded shocks.
Hard to tell from the pics on the fiche, but the part #'s go as follows:
01 SXR:
FF: 8CH-2376A-40-00
FR: 8CH-47481-40-00
RR: 8CH-47480-40-00
04 VIPER:
FF: 8FB-2376A-00-00
FR: 8FE-47481-00-00
RR: 8FE-47480-00-00
02 & 03 Viper are both 8EK prefix, and I forget which, but one of them also has the -40 in 3rd set of numbers. Ohlins Vipers are obviously a whole other ball game.
Different prefix could be a bunch of things including shock color in an assembly. Or mount type. I don't know.
Not sure where the -40 comes into play. Yamaha used to bury size and length of bolts and nuts in that section of their part numbers, but in this case I have no idea.
Any clues?
Yea, I thought it was stupid to think about buying these without a sled, but knowing I'll have one soon made me seriously consider it if the fit.
I actually found 2 sleds that will work for me. One of those two are coming home with me one way or another. Going to see one tomorrow that may be the one?
Guess we'll find out.

The guy that rebuilds my shocks told me they are the same, only difference would be color of the spring, and the way they are valved. I was looking into it a couple years ago, and I got a set of SXr shocks for a lot less than Viper shocks because of what the shock guy said, I then had him revalve them. The mounts are the same.
