I just changed the stator on my Viper, its brand new from Yamaha and initially fixed my issues which were: no speedo or tach, dim light, no brakelight, and ran it ran like crap. Now with the new stator I fired it up and everything seemed fine, headlight nice and bright, when I switched from low beam to high beam the tach/speedo didnt reset or turn off completely, the brake light works. But as I kept driving something popped up.....the harder I hit the throttle the more the tach/speedo would reset. When the blue high beam indicatior light tended to flicker. Sometimes when I stopped the sled, the tach/speedo would shut down but when I reved up the motor sitting there it would pop back on again. I know the obvious answer would be a rub thru on the wiring harness but I pulled the harness from under the motor and everything seems ok. The only place I didnt visually inspect was under the gas tank.....so I guess I go there next. Unless anyone else has some other idea???
By the way I switched out the voltage regulator located at my right foot, and the relays at my left foot. Could my speedo be shorting out or burning out??? Has anyone ever heard of that happening?? Any input would help......

sometimes a bearing going on your drive shaft will kill the speedo. check that.
the harness has issues below the cdi, at the handle bar pivot, at the stator plug. check all of these. also, you could have a relay kicking off and on, thus causing your reset issue.

If you are mud bogging your viper like in your picture that might be your problem...LOL

ha there was no mud there.....all water!! Ok Bethviper I have an extra relay will switch them out, and check the harness at the cdi and handle bars because I didnt inspect them cosely there.....and the syptoms definetly show up when your thumb is on the throttle and the sled is bouncing around suggesting the wire rub!
Lol I agree with Beth it's not a 4 wheeler or a boat lol that's why ur whole electrical system shorted lol if ur going to plane water don't sink it lol skip it or go around

ok ok boys....that pic was taken 5 years ago....sled ran fine until this year when one of the allen screws holding on the stator pick up twisted out and went thru my stator and the plate.....what really happened was 3 years ago I put my Viper on an open trailer on a slushy road it got covered in salty slush. Needless to say I took the sled completely apart right down to the fram and sand blasted everything....unfortunately I didn't change the wireing harness because after a visual inspection everything looked pretty....too bad because I have another one sitting in my shop
Change it all ur wires are most likely burnt ! Go stator new ! Get some used wire harness and Cdi , and resistors ! I would even change the gauges and light toggle! Look at ur wires smell for burning or shorting dis coloring u know the drill ! Best is to replace it!
