Had my 2002 viper out today. All was good when speedo quit and lights went dim, and started running badly. Speedo blinks on and off intermittantly now and lights remain dim. Any ideas what this could be?
Thanks, Rob

Im not sure if the Vipers have the same problem as the SRX but i recently had the same problem (Mine also misfired from time to time) and it was the wiring harness. I had a rub through under the engine but i think they added a protector there in 02.
Other places to check would be below the cdi, at the handle bar pivot or at the stator plug.

If there are other probable causes your in the right place. A lot of knowledgable people on here ... Hope this helps! Good luck ;)!

wire ripped fromstator to plug just went through this on mine, take the airbox off you can see all the wires going up the chaincase side, one has a protective boot, lift that boot and trace ot to the spot it comes out of the motor(stator)youll find a broken wire.butt connectors heat shrink and black tape are your friends!!!

Check the stator. Had the kind of the same problem with mine. Just replaced the stator about a month ago and everything works fine now. The Vipers had a problem with stator. Just do a search on here and you will see all the stator issues.

Thanks for the ideas. I pulled the harness to the light and checked it all out. Couldn't find anything. I noticed after reassembly, when applying the brakes with high beams on, the speedo and tach quit. Seem to be OK on low beam, although the lights definitely dim when applying the brakes. Could this be a short in the tail light, or most likely the stator. If stator, how can I measure out put? How do I change the stator?

i just had the same issue and it was the stator. Turm off grip and throttle warmers and disconnect a head light to see if speedo works properly. If it does work it would seem you have a stator issue

It's the stator if the problem really shows when tapping the brake handle, i.e. gauge retarting or headlights dimming.

they dident ground the heated visor hookup, and have it hooked into the taillights!!!look harder there is a rub through or broken wire, might have to untape some stuff to find it..it may even be over by your left foot in the relay area, this is where they would usually splice in,maybe they dident tape or cover the hot lead and its shorting out?jmo~smoke
