I never noticed this before. Two weekends in a row now. SRX starts no problem in the morning with choke. Put put around for 5-10min then I stop it. For sure it didn't get a chance to be at its normal temperature.

Go to start it 10-20 minutes later. Not cold enough for choke so I just crank it. Starts first too third pull. Idles really low. If I touch the gas she dies. So I just let it idle for 1 minutes or 2. During this time, this is what I have never notice before, I can hear small puff like a tiny backfire. This goes on until the minute pass and I can give her the gas a bit then she is fine. So today while she was doing this I stop it to check the plugs. The center one was dry and the two outside was wet. Is this normal? I no this is not the procedures to check plugs but is it normal for one to be different the the other two at idle?

My sled runs good any other time after this...

Every year before you pull the cord, stop and pull carbs off clean them thoroughly then re install carbs and then pull the cord and have fun without smoking a piston.

might as well check your fuel screws while your there try alittle richer then you are at now, my loves it since I started running 1&3/4 turns out, pulls away from idle super smooth.

Is the pilot jet only used for idling? At what rpm does the main jet take over?

I have MrViper trail port with different jet setting. I can't remember which but whatever he told me to do with my setup. I have it written down at the cottage.

Does this affect my fuel screw setting or oem specs of 1 1/8 out is good? Anyone else running 1 3/4 turns out instead?

Oh for sure. I'll tackle opening the carbs friday before next ride.

I'm just trying to understand the workings of the carbs.

Pilot jet provides 3-5% of the total fuel flow regardless of throttle position, midrange= the needle jet / jet needle (+ pilot), then main jet for top end (+pilot). Pilot jet is always providing fuel to the motor...

yep, clean them carbs and remove the pilot jets, make sure you can see light thru them. Theres a how to with pics in the tech section, its easy just take your time. You need to do this every year BEFORE you ride the sled.

Thanks Northern srx. That is exactly what I was wondering.

Yes Mr Viper. I am heading off now to the cottage to clean them. I have printed both instructions (I think one is yours) in the tech section.

Well it took me 3 hours. Learned allot but it seems I'm not done learning. Cause after all that work I had to use my fathers venture rs for the night. lol

I had 2 pilots with crap in it. Master jets where all fine. My fuel screws where at 3 1/2 turns! I adjusted them to 2. Seems like a happy medium from whats posted here. The way I understand is you tight clockwise and you unscrew the turns you want? What is this fuel screw do exactly?

I started the sled and it idles at 3000rpm. Gas just bogs and it doesn't even move. What did I f*up guys?

No. I don't think. Supposed to? I did pass them thru the second metal collar where the handlebars. It was tighter then before...

ok, when you look at the carb rack, you see the threaded adjuster with the jam nut. If you take your finger and touch the throttle cable itself(insert, braided cable) is it taunt, or does it have some slack in it?? it needs to have slack or it holds the throttle open slightly(high idle) and then the tors will kick in and it wont rev up just bog.

thats what i am guessing as its a common mistake, loosen up the jam nut and thread the adjuster down into the bracket more and get the cable to have slack in it, tighten down the jam nut and start it up, see how its does.

if thats it, you taught yourself a lesson you wont forget next year when you clean them....hang in there youll be ok!

Bingo bango! That was it! That is some service after sale. Thank again.

You'll be glad to know your ported engines run smooth as ever. Went for a couple hours ride on the river. Didn't want to pin it much cause it was just barely above freezing. So I kept it around 80-120kph. Perfect ride.

Glad, you got it, youll never make that mistake again. Dont forget, clean those carbs every year before you ride it, itll make you have a great season.

Ride safe!!!!!!! ;)! :sled2: :sled2: :sled2:
