Started machine Saturday morning, went for a quick spin on the lake, snow was about 10-12 inches deep, pushed it hard for about ten minutes and went back to cottage to join group for a ride when I noticed that my machine was on fire.

Raised the hood to discover that the aluminum heat shield was actually on fire and melting on the second muffler, was so hot it started to melt the plastic shroud.

Threw snow on it and put fire out, after it cooled a little I started again to see if there was a restriction in the exhaust however it was fine and I ran it for over 200 kms with no problems.

Anyone ever hear of this, or have any idea on what may have gone wrong?

mouse nest inside.......................may have ran ok but it likely caught fire and caused the metal to glow with the exhaust gas running thru it feeding it air and fuel mix, causes the steel to turn orange and light the alum up!

The same thing happen to my 2001 SRX 700 yesterday…. I put the fire out and continued riding for about and hour. I removed the pipes once when I got home and it looks like one of the pipes got to hot and lit rubber damper on fire on the muffler.

Did you ever find out what was wrong?

yeah, sounds like a mouse made a home in your pipe. saw a sled completely burn down from this last year

No it was fine after, I ran approximately another 1500 kms after and no problems. I just purchased the new 2014 viper and its a sweet ride, spent last weekend up in the huntsville area.
