i just put my first 80 miles on my 2000sxr 600 and the air box has got a good amount of oil in it. also i totally topped off the oil and its down to the one quart line. the plugs looked ok wet because i only unloaded off the trailer to the back yard and checked them this morning a little dark but not black. is this an unusualy amount of oil compsumption ? the sled has no bogs runs tight . i never had a triple before so i really dont know what to expect. im gonna check the plugs at wot in the yard to get a more accurate plug analasis. my vmax4 dont even burn that much oil in an 80 mile clip. something is up. will free play on the oil pump line have a direct effect on oil use? i noticed when i cleaned the sled there was not much freeplay at all on the oil pump like none. it looked like a pain in the keyster. thanks guys and gals

Well there shouldnt really be any oil in the airbox, Ive seen a light film but never pooling. As for the oil usage from my experience an 80 mile ride should be about half way, although this is scewed since the lower half of the oil jug on these sleds is a lot bigger than the top.

I can usually get 3-4 full tanks of fuel to one tank of oil.

It will hold 2.5 qt so if you used 1.5 qt for 80 miles that sounds about right for that sled, depends what type of riding sounds like a little bit too much but not anything out of the ordinary.

thats not good ive got pooling oil. so smthing it up . it was only 65 miles i did the math wrong. i was on it pretty good but never really wide open(maybe 4-5 times) trying to get a feel. this is not right. ill wait for more input thx

check your oil line settings . pull out and measure 23 mm or so.or at least make sure its set right ,then you can go from there . that tank should hold 3.1 quarts, I believe.

i dont understand "oil line settings". the pump? so if it holds 3 qt i burned 2 quarts in 65 miles its down to the one quart line now. the sled is running awsome but a ton of oil in my air box.

after taking a closer look at my operation i noticed a 4 inch extension on my oil pump line added because they put a bar riser on. now i cant take a free play measurement because the extension is not oem there is no spot to take take it from. can i still make an adjustment from underneth? an easy adjustment just turned into a real kick in the groin.

ok im going crazy!!!!! is the free play adjustment up buy the carbs on the oil line or is the adjusment at the pump. i took a look at the photo in the manual and its confuseing me.

its usually the cable by the carbs and does down to the oil pump. The cable has an adjusment covered by rubber boot over the cable. The cable splits there and here is a gap ha can be adjusted.

look down at the carb rack, find the oil cable and youll see it has 2 rubber sleeves that go over the htreaded meatl adjuster, slide the top sleeve up on the cable and pull the top cable up out of the adjuster, take a set of calipers and measure from the cable end to the housing edge, this is where you set your freeplay. If its tight its going to use alot of oil. measure what you have and report back.

the top of my cable wont come out i dont want to force it. but it looked like the adjuster was maxed out all the way to the bottom. daman has got some good photos on the subject i looked them over and im on track just cant get the cable out. ill be back in a half hour

i cant post a piture to try and describ my issue but my cable is not coming out of that adjuster nut on top. i pulled it out but thr furrel on the end of the cable stayed in the adjuster. i dont even know if im doing it right.the adjuster is tight no threds exposed this is how it was when i got it. so i took a meassurment pulling up on the oil pump line so its wide open and measure the distance of the cable end to top of adjuster???? i dont know i cant type, spell, put pictures on here im lost.if im doing it right i really dont know i came up with 17mm with no room for adjustment on the adjuster. if i remove the 8mm lock nut it might give me enough room. is the cable stretched? all i know is that to adjust oil flow shouldnt be this hard. im about to bite the bullet pay the money for the extra gas and ride my vmax4, the best running sled ive ever seen. i dont know about this sxr pain in the ***

slowly but surely im getting her. this is like my working log :o| lol. so i think the cable is stretched so i need a new one for sure i think. the oil tank holds 3.2 quarts i burned two quarts in 65 miles . if i remove the lock nut its an extra 3-4mm but i might be short a mm or 2. so will a 4-5 mm adjustment show a huge improvement? am at the one quart line now and no snow locally so ill have to wait to test or is there so way i can? let me remove the lock nut take a measurment and see what i got .

the top part of the oil res holds 2 quarts? dont seem right but it does say on there one quart line hmmmm...

ok removed the lock nut on the adjuster and my freeplay is now at 22.6mm good starting point? i will get a new cable but just not now ive already dumped over $1000.00 into it to get it here. checked the plugs at wot and they look awsome. did not check at half throttel but i will before the day is over. so i will probably ride tuesday should i fill my oil res and keep checking it? i will take the air box off tomorrow clean it so i can see if i pool oil. i hope this helps i cant afford all that ipone oil its nuts.
