99 sx 600 over heating? bled the system still overheats? Runs fine til it gets hot. Then starts backfire a little. Any help would be great. Plan on bleading again, i got directions from the fax page. Do the waterpumps ever go bad?

not so much the impeller that goes bad but the the brass gear on the shaft that drives the impeller via the crank can become loose when the engine warms up and not correctly spin the impeller causing your overheat.

I had the brass gear go on a sxr 600 last year, run it and keep feeling the heat exchangers in the back mine were cool to the touch when the temp light came on.

True ,But on mine it was the impellar that wore out .Its a mag nesium impellar with an aluminum insert, that slides on a stainless steel splined shaft... the aluminum insert rounded out on the shaft.I believe its designed that way so all you have to do is replace the impellar instead of the whole works. I have never had a problem with the brass spline on the crank go bad, nor has any of my buds had that problem. I suppose it caN happen its just that i have never seen it happen .

you guys are both right, I have had them with both problems. Of course, its easier to check the impeller first as you can do so with the engine still in the sled and together. if you check and if its good and tight on the splines of the waterpumpshaft, your doing the crank rebuild..................

I have also had this a couple times on a srx as well on the crank gear. They dont slip till the engine runs for a bit then the heat lets them move because they expanded.

Pump seems ok

Ok got the pump housing off and everythng seems ok. impeller is tight and turns when motor is spun? I bled the thing three times? I'm at a loss.

Thanks

Thanks for all your help. After removing the pump housing I drained the system and then refiled with coolant. Bled it out, and seems to not overheat now. Heat exchangers warm up nicely. Took it for a test drive ran it hard never got a red lighe on dash. Did stall on me once while at a idle, but started right up. Acts like water in gas maybe. I will drain tank and refill with fresh. Thanks again until next time.

Glad its workin good now, its very well possible you just had air in it, the rear exchanger can be a bugger to get the air out of sometimes. I always raise up the front or the back of the sled depending on which one you want to bleed.

if it overheats again and since you checked the impeller, the brass gear for some reason slips on the crank, but it wont slip till the heat from the engine opens up the press fit clearance and then she wont pump the water and it overheats.

glad you dont have to fix that if shes good to go now, have fun! :sled2:

making strange noise and smell

Ok took it for a little ride again tonight. Pops and bobles while going slow, getting a strange smell also. Could I have a bad head gasket maybe leaking antifreese into combustion chamber. could be the reason I had air in the system and the wired smell? No temp light though. Only rode for a couple of miles letting my ten year old drive with me on back. When you hammer it, it sounds fine.
