Riding my sled yesterday and it just quit. 01 SXR 700. So far checked the stop sw,only thing is that the written instructions say that there should be continuity when pulled out(run) and the wiring diagram indicates there should be continuity when in the down(off) position. I have continuity when down. ??? Which do I believe. Also checked ignition sw OK, pick up coil OK, stator resistance is a little high at .9 ohms instead of max of .44 ohms. Anybody got any clues. Is it the stator, CDI, voltage regulator, what happens if the capacitors fail. Also removed the load relay which eliminates any problems in the lighting and gauge circuits. HELP PLEASE. :o|

1.)do a dynamic check, hook up multi meter to pick up coil wires and pull the engine over, does it have varying voltage coming out of it?

2.)if "yes"it does, then check again at the same wires going into the cdi box, same thing?

3.) if "yes" - go to the output wire on the cdi, it goes down to the coils, does it show varying voltage at a higher voltage spec then on the other side coming from engine when you pull it over?

4.) if "no" the cdi box is faulty.

5.)if -"yes" then you have a primary coil problem if no spark

Ok so I just got a chance to do the dynamic check. To check the CDI output do you check each of the 3 wires for the coils coming out of the CDI to ground for voltage, because there is none. If so that means I looking for a new CDI box. Thanks for the help.

yes, youd check each wire to see if theres power headed to coil.

as long as your on/off switch checks out and your key switch, you need a cdi box then......

Thanks for the info, it was much better that what is in my manual for checking out the ign sys. I guess I'm in the market for a CDI box. My stop and key sw's should be OK as the power to the CDI box is interrupted and grounded before the CDI.

no need to thank me, its all good if you send me some of that trout that you have from ice fishin....LOL ;)!

if you have someone around with a 01 sxr 700 always good to try it before you buy it(cdi), I said about the key switch and kill switch as they basicly control the ground of the cdi so if they go bad they ground the cdi-no spark.

sounds like you did a good check.....

Well guess what, I plugged my cdi box back in today to do some more testing and I got spark. Runs like a top, maybe a loose connection or moisture, I don't know. But can I trust it back in the bush?
