I picked up a 2001 SXR 600 for my 12yo son to drive. It runs, sounds and drives great, but it does seem to rev really high. What should these things rev to? we're seeing 9000 to 9100. is that normal for the 600 triple? also he's only getting about 8 to 9mpg. should i do anything to it to bring the revs down?? and can i do anything to get better MPG? clutch spring? clutch weights? gearing?

It appears to be stock parts in it currently? 9100 is to high for a stock machine I believe the 600 should be somewhere around 8400-8500.
I would first try to see if it has stock parts in it, or if the PO tinkered with it.

i forgot to say, we did put a brand new belt on it. dropped only about 150rpm, still seeing around 9000ish maybe a little less. as far as i can tell the machine is all stock except for the track. that looks to be about .625" lugs on it. stock gearing is 20/39 for that year, but i didn't open it up to confirm that's what's in there.
I don't know anything about the rivets. have only ever worked on polaris clutches before now.

problem fixed. the secondary spring was set in the wrong holes. I changed it so the tangs are now both in the holes marked with a #3 and she's running at 8500.
