Ok, here's the deal:
Bought a 2001 SX700R. The PO painted the inside of the windy blaze orange.....NOT cool.

Found a stock used one for $20 from Miller Supply in Clintonville. Said it was perfect, and was thrilled. When it got here, I cleaned off the pound of dust and YUCK. Most of the top half was opaque and cloudy and it looked like the plastic protective coating was almost baked onto it at one point. Even had a texture. Either that, or it had been laying in a puddle of ammonia, or flames were shooting out of the air intake on the donor sled. I expected the odd nick or scratch as it was used, but REALLY?!?
I called and bitched, they said it was really dusty when they sent it out and didn't notice it, but they wouldn't take it back regardless. I was not impressed.

Found one on ebay at a dealer in Toledo, OH, but the picture didn't match the description, and part # didn't fly for a dual headlight, so I called. Guy was great, and after a bunch of dicking around, we narrowed it down to what I wanted. Light smoke, mid-height, black screening around the bottom. Just like stock, but..... smoked. He even called Yamaha, and they said YES, that is the windshield we are talking about. Mid height, black bottom, smoked top. Gave him my card #, he ordered it. I was happily waiting for it's arrival.
Well.....guess what. It showed up today. Pulled it out of the box, and it's clear just like what I have on there now. Black bottom, clear top.
What I got was #8DS-77210-00-BK.

Port Yamaha was of no help either.

This had been a 2-3 week procedure, and I'm frustrated, and about ready to go after my opaque $20 windshield with a plastic headlight repair kit to make it clear again and just give up with however it turns out.

Can ANYONE help me out with a part # for the stock, 12 3/4" mid height windshield with the black screening around the bottom, and a smoke tint to it? Maybe 8DS-77210-00-SM? I have no idea. I have also seen SMA#s for single headlight systems. Any clues?

Could SOMEONE, ANYONE send me in the right direction, or sell me one that's not junk. WHATEVER. There's only a couple weeks of the season left, and I just want this nightmare to be over with.

There.....rant complete.

Thanks,
~G.D.

Jason?
Hey, how's it going?

Yea, this windshield thing is driving me nuts. Hoping someone can hook me up. I've just about been through the ringer with it. At least they are letting me return this last one. Still out the shipping, but whatever.
I just wasn't feeling the blaze orange. Kinda made it hard to see the ski tips in your peripheral vision easily. Plus, he must have put it on wet. Some paint dribbles were on the gauge pod that I still have to get off of there.

Holy crap, I don't know how he drove it with that much toe in. WOW, it plowed something fierce and the rear end was always chasing the front. Darted like CrAzY. Anything over about 45-50mph in a straight line was taking your life in your own hands. 70mph was the edge. When you got scared and let off the throttle and you'd about get pitched over the bars it plowed so bad!!!
Still tweaking a little bit here and there, but it's a completely different machine now.

Also....I feel a bit guilty now, and feel like I stole it from him. There isn't a thing wrong with that cooling system except maybe it wasn't bled out. There may have been some coolant left in the pan when he showed it to me. I have not lost a single drop in the 400-450 miles that I've driven it. Dry as a bone. Hose is always full, and the bottle is actually overfull from how I filled it last.
After about 100mi warmers also have seemed to have healed themselves too.

Great machine otherwise. I couldn't really be much more pleased. I'm gonna try that 51/43 helix thing maybe over the summer and see if I can make it pull a bit harder now that I'm getting most of the power to the ground.
All I need now is that and a skidplate just for piece of mind.

Take care, and tell your bro I said hey, and thank him again for me. I am very happy. Assure him that his former machine has replaced my guitars as my most prized possession.

Thanks,
~G.D.

Why not just scuff up that orange and paint it black. What I have done on other sleds and works like a champ. If you wet sand im sure you might be able to get the orange off. Worth a try and dont cost much

The orange is on the inside. I'd have to get the orange off completely if I were going to paint it any other color. Either way, I'm not fond of a solid windshield and not being able to see my ski tips unless I'm turning.
I'm still hoping to find a light smoke windshield though.
I bought a headlight repair kit and am gonna hit the replacement I bought to see if it cleans up at all. They work wonders on headlight assemblies.
If that goes well, I may do the same to the blaze orange mess and see what happens.

Thanks for the heads up. It's getting closer. May be a bit tall at 14.5", and doesn't really show it as smoke in the picture. Then again, on Yamaha's website, the pictures of the low, med, and high windshields are all shuffled around too.
Wish I could see a real picture of it.....

Stock height is 12.7 " on SXR
Low is 9.3" on SRX
Highis 15.5" on Venture

I don't know what to do. Now I'm pretty much stuck with the other windshield I just bought. To send it back to Ohio is just shy of $30 either UPS, or USPS. So if you think about it, the $12 or $15 I had to pay for shipping to get it here, plus the almost $30 I'd have to pay to get it back to return it, we're looking at almost 2/3 of what I paid for the windshield to begin with. I'm just going to keep it as a spare.
If the one you linked me ends up being clear top like it shows, and too tall on top of that, then I'd have 4 windshields that I'm not satisfied with.
I sent a message and asked him a bunch of questions. We'll have to see what he has to say.
I hope that this works out. I'm REALLY frustrated with this shizz.

Thanks again,
~G.D.

Thanks for looking.
Yea, I'm pretty disgusted with this whole procedure so far. Guess I'll just put on my nice new stock replacement one, and try to clean up the other ones and then I'll have spares I guess. Hopefully I can find one though. I'm not going to spend another almost $100 on the SnoStuff one in the link in this thread. The seller was less than helpful. I asked him a bunch of questions and he seemed evasive, and cherry picked his answers.
