Just bought a 98 srx600. Seller claimed that engine was rebuilt last year by the local shop. No snow there at pickup so no test ride. Got it home to North Carolina and had a couple fresh inches the next day so took it for a quick rip. POOR bottom end.
Go to clean poser valves and one has a broken cable and another cable is frayed. Run a compression test, throttle wide open and power valves removed...100-105 on all cylinders. Kinda pissed cause dude lied to me. He even was giving me the you gotta be careful about buying things on craigslist ...never know what you get and his sled is good to go...
Anyway...what is the cheapest route to go to get the compression back up without dumping a bunch into this thing....it is going to get used VERY little. Could I just order a ring set and gaskets, hone and be on my way, or is that just plain stupid?
Who has the best prices on engine kits?

Try another tester they do differ in # is it easy to pull over or hard?Iwould fix up the power valve cable problems and give her a go.My 600 is down on compreshion as it is a highmiler never touched moter but is only used 3 or 4 weekends a year so my wife just rides it the way it is.

Not any sled trails. This is the south...it snows and people get off the roads so they are wide open

I agree on trying another compression tester. The fact that all three cylinders are within 5lbs leans to the fact that they are OK.
-clean repair power valves and cables
-clean carbs
-put fress fuel in it
Ride it!

If it hasn't been run much, maybe it needs more break-in time. Your compression numbers aren't too far off of what I've seen at 120-125. Could be the tester as noted above, also what is the elevation where you tested? Others would know better than I, but if you are at higher elevation, perhaps your comp #'s would normally be lower than at sea level.
Does the sled seem to be running rich, especially on the poor bottom end? Maybe it's been jetted richer and/or richer needle settings, or too rich for higher elevation, and she needs to build some rpm to clean out.

Good points guys...elevation is 3500...might be a few psi loss.
with one powervalve not working that would kill the top end right?
I think I read 4%/1000ft....so that would get me to 114ish???

One power valve inop really does turn these SRX engines into dogs...more then one would expect.

I wouldn't be too worried about those numbers. 2 different testers
can give you drastically different numbers. If the numbers are all close, fix the valve, go through the carbs and ride it. Compression doesn't tell you much in my opinion. I have seen good numbers on bad motors and vice versa. If you want the real story, do a leak down.

thanks guys,,,cables on the way.
If i were to rebuild wheres a good place to get parts?
