Took my 97 sx 700 in to the shop to get the primary looked at I was turning 9100 rpms. The belt that was on it was a yamaha 89l-17641-00

He said they put a 17.2 rivet inner hole and a 13.9 rivet outer hole. Had it down to 8600. When I test road it before leaving it was still turning 8800-8900. I also bought a new belt. Mine was shot. Keep in mind no yamaha dealers around me. The belts he sells are ultimax pro 138-4416u4. maesurements 44 3/4 by 1 7/16 My belt deflection was about 1 inch engagement was about 4100 but 8900 rpms

So I went back in said hey I just paid you what to fix this and we are still turning 8900. WTF. So then they started trying different belts. I ended up with a ultimax pro 138-4432u4. measurements 45 1/4 by 1 27/64. Now the rpms are 8400 to 8500. I would say my belt deflection is about 1 1/8 inch The top of the belt is riding right even with the top of the secondary. engagement is about 3600 a little low but 8500 rpms

I have two questions why does that extra 1/2 inch in length drop the rpms by 500?? The belts are both ultimax pro same compound. Also the 89l 8dn they tried had it around 8700-8900 rpms.

2nd it what are the measurements for the Yamaha belt 89l-17641-00

Rpms usally drop or rise , because of the material they are made of- {harder compound = more rpms!}

The dimensions you are looking for :top width=35.3 mm
thickness= 15 mm
angle= 28 degrees
outside circumference=1124 mm
these are dim for 89-l and 8-ch belts which are soft compound belts , the 8 dn is a harder compound belt...you can use any of the 3,but the 8dn will be a higher rpm at shiftout than the other two!

The 8dn, 8ch and the 89l where producing 9000 rpms give or take a couple 100.

Isn't the 89l just a updated part to 8ch??

Are these 3 belts all the same length and width?? I understand they are different compounds.

The 89L is for the 500cc sleds an it is not as wide as the other 2 8DN or the 8CH. The 89L is not the up-dated belt it is the old belt it replaced the 8F2 that was used on the old 440.

haha..The 89L was on my sxr600 when I bought it from a co-worker.He told me that was what the dealer recommended him at the time.I took it off when I go the sled and switched to 8dn's.

the 89L and the 8ch are the same length and width, the 8dn is a little narrower and a little longer! but is thicker! you can use any of the three for your sled! with slight variences in performance. If you dont notice the differences in performance then you have other issues with your clutching.

If you go to yamaha parts house and look it up it call for the 89L-17641-01-00 on a 97 sx700. Now if you look up a 98 sx700 it calls for the 89dn-17641-01-00. Which I understand I can use any of the 3. I just find it interesting the dealer change belts from 97 to 98. Being they are the same sled. Same motor, same clutch, ect.

The 89l belt I tried was pretty worn out. cord where showing on the side thats the reason I needed a new belt. The parts house did not have any Yamaha belts excepted on on a used sled he had which was the 89dn which put it at 8700-8800.

Do you guy know how the ultimax pro compares compound wise To the yamaha belts??? Wondering if they are a harder or softer compound compared to the 89L and the 89dn.
