Finally got the recoil all slapped on and fixed and new plugs put into the machine and fired the sucker up and went out raping. Turned off the sled and took a break and stuff and tried to pull start the sucker and it was not catching
had buddy pick me up in his truck and tore off the recoil for the 3rd or 4th time and adjusted the cover plate to see if the dog (cam guide)would come out easier. It did and i re-installed the recoil back on and took another rip out to the gas station, refueled and tried to pull start and same thing happened again! Lucky me i had a emergency rope to use on the primary and got the thing started for the rest of the day(4 starts in that ride). Getting 3/4 done with the ride my buddy noticed my lights weren't on at all and i noticed my RPM gauge was working intermittently (taillights also like to go out sometimes). So i am like what the heck is wrong now. I'm thinking a whole now CDI box and a lot of money out of my pocket if i want to go out in the U.P. nights. What do you guys think of this?

sounds like a harness rub thru.

Checked the connections at the cowl end and everything was secure when doing the shake test. What happens is i'll be going and then the rpm gauge just shuts off, i assume that is when the lights do too..hard to tell when you are going 20-30. Popping off the recoil and putting in a different cam guide from a 02 viper, should fit.

not sure if the vmax has the same common rub through spots as the srx/vipers but common areas for those are under the engine, under the bar pad, the wires going to the tail light, and where the wires go to the cdi box. It's a pain in the rear but you need to check every individual wire in those areas and repair/re-tape and protect them with some convolute tubing.
I know for a fact the tail light problem is a short, i can wiggle it from the outside and it come back on, and more often on the inside part, tail light is a summer project...i just want my head light and recoil to work XD

My '97 Vmax had rub throughs under the engine, and under the pipe (where it makes a 180 deg bend). Sounds like they're similiar to the SRX/Vipers in that regard..
