I have a 1997 vmax 600 XT (twin), It runs like a top and Ive never had an issue with it, when cold it does smoke like a bastard. But itll pull to 100mph no problem. It has about 8800kms on it now and as far as I know has never been opened up, other than first year (Yamaha recall on wrist pin I believe)

I did a compression test and got 110psi, it definitely sounds low.(both cylinders were identical) The sled had run for about 10-15min then cooled for 30min before I tested it. But under same conditions with same tester my buddies 99' 700 trip was showing 120-125psi.

Im just wondering if I should do a top end rebuild this summer or if you guys think shed be fine for another season.

I plan on using all stock parts for rebuild.

if you are still hitting a 100 with it..leave it.My SXR600 can only hit about 90 tops on smooth surface, maybe 155 on a long haul.My compression is way higher then 110.I used to almost hit 100 when I did the one layer head gasket mod,but after a top end refresher..I stay with stock gasket.

Ok, I may let it go another year. On the lake on perfectly smooth surface 100 is about its max, but in 6inches of snow I was sitting neck and neck with my buddies 99 sx700 at about 80mph. We both have 1" lug tracks, he has 144 studs I have none, Im also still running steel skis.

same here then.I can get about 84 mph on snow ,and almost 100 on smooth after a long pull.sleds just to heavy with us on it as well.Funny thing is my 1978 Exciter440 used to hit 93 on the speedo and my 81 SRX 440 used to hit 115 on the speedo. The newer sleds are to heavy, the old sleds were nice and light and fun as well.

Agreed, I actually just picked up an 89' phazer (black and orange) for free, and its runs. Going to fix it up for my girlfriend so I dont have to ride two up anymore! But I have a feeling I may be taking it on her once and a while.

I would say your fine for another year (or longer) Personally I would keep my eyes peeled for a wrecked red head tripple (600 or 700). All those parts will go right under your 600 twin hood. I ran a 98 srx 600 hood on my 99 srx 700 and had a few guys look at me like WTF! Thats a 600?
