Hey folks-

I picked up a 2001 VK 540 in November and have had this power issue the whole time. The sled will not go more than about 25-30 mph, and if uphill even less.

I drained it of old (summer) gas, and filled with fresh.

I have pulled the carburetor, completely disassembled, soaked in cleaner, and reinstalled and that has not fixed the issue. I checked the cylinders thinking maybe one was not firing and that was not it.

Also, the sled runs extremely rich, and smokes a lot ! After awhile of riding if left idling, it will die out.

Going downhill clutch will shift into higher gears but uphill it pretty much stays in low gear unable to power up.

I'm to the point of taking in for diagnosis but if it's something I can repair my self and save some money I'm willing.

What have I missed any ideas ?

Thanks!

does it rev up fully on the stand?

how is the wiring under the y-pipe? another site member posted about a problem that happens there on vk and enticers.

air box clean?

tube under the main jet clean? has holes in the side that like to plug with crap.

have you checked if the fuel pump diaphram is split? it will flood the carb if it is and be very hard on gas.

i have an uncle with 3 of these sleds and he has one with 20000 miles that does the die out problem but the motor has never been apart on it so i suspect the rings on that one.

I have a 93 VK and the crank seals had been blown out before i got it and didn't
check it until piston flaked to bits and it never stopped running, but wouldn't idle.
For fun check compression and crank seals... How about the fuel pump is perforated
and over fueling that cylinder ??? Muffler bunged up ?? mine looks like someone cut
and filled about 10 spots on jacket....pull muffler and stick a shop vac in it and it
should just breathe freely...if it revs up , someone might have a nest in it.
good luck
Ron

So I took it in, they checked the compression which was great, the carburetor was never adjusted for high altitiude riding. The mechanic replaced the main jet, and adjusted it for altitude, as well as making some adjustments to the clutching. She is a performer now! Thanks for all the tips!
