are the vmax 500s gas pigs? my gfs 98 vmax 500 went through more gas then my 98 vmax 700 on our trip to the buckhorn in munising this last weekend!!! would turning the fuels screws down help? i havent touched anything yet or even dug into it

Yes, the triples will go further than the twins on a gallon of gas. I have a 99 sx 500 that I replaced the 43 degree helix with a 47 - dropped 1 main jet size - and leaned the needles slightly this helped the fuel econ a little, it will get about 11-12 mpg now almost up to par with my 600 tripple 12-13 mpg.

Took a 140 miles trip last weekend and got 12.5 mpg on my 136 sxr 700 but playing is dif story

run the same way, same distance, the sx700 is at 1/4-3/8 tank when my sons 99 500vmax runs out. everyone I talk to says that's how those twins are. don't seem right, but it is.

I have a sxr 500 twin and she is is a pig on gas. If we do a combination of lake runing and trail rideing I could probably get about 70 miles per tank but it would be on fumes! I can't believe how the twins like more fuel than the triples!

Because its got no power so you're always pushing that flipper. The 700's will cruise all day long at 70mph no sweat on a 500 its wfo all the time.

That's exactly what it is! if I drive my mothers vmax 500 I'm always wfo and with my viper? Well.. I'm always wfo too... Never mind, I get terrible gas mileage.. :(

But I totally agree with what ur saying, that's the way I always thought of it too

More than likely the carbs are dirty, needles, seats and o-rings are shot due to the crap fuel we have today. Additionally, the 500 and 600 twins are jetted pig rich to start - you can drop your mains, pilots, and your needles until you're just right for the temps you ride in most often.

People have just accepted that the twins were pigs and that's just how it is..it's not. You can get these sleds to run 11-14mpg all day if you just do a little work..especially if the sled isn't modded..

Another thing to consider are worn out clutch weights and rollers..being a sled that's 15 years old there could be a whole bunch of things hurting the mpg..

My '95 that is piped and clutched was getting 11-12 mpg last week when I was riding in temps that were in the high 30's, when it's nice n' cold I'll see 12-12.5mpg. Used to get up to 13-14mpg before I dropped some weight out of the primary..point is, these twins can get decent mileage if you tinker with them and find a jetting and clutching combo that works good for ya..

Or, get a new sled and give the 700 to the gf!

Good luck!

Has anyone that has dropped jetting had any experience with the 10% alcohol fuel and various temps without having to rejet when it gets cold? Ours has always seemed rich & drank fuel, 6 to 9 mpg, but fuel is cheaper than rebuilds.

ran my 2001 sx500r on ethenol blended gas for years. never had any problems as i was running br9eix plugs whitch help compensate for the ethenol. that sled actually hated to run 91 for some reason. sold it to my brother who sold it last season to the current owner who finally blew it up.

check your gearing as the 00-01 sx500r where geard down for some reason. once i geared the one i had up, it would get 10-12mpg trail running. before the re-gear 6-8 was normal.

How do you re-gear...I like to plod along at 20 mph or so and its running 6000 rpm just after hooking up at 4000-4500.

I don't need to have the bars ripped out of my hands or need 100 mph (I chickened out at 85 mph).... but I would like an easy lower rpm cruise around 20 - 30 mph...

in my case, i went to the stock gearing chart and found out that the 01 sx500r i had was geared down 1 tooth compared to the 99 sx500/xtc/vmax. when i geared it to 99 spec, the fuel milage picked up.

in your case kenora, sounds like you need a clutch kit/set-up for sleigh pulling or low end crawling. heelclicker 40-10's work really well for this.

Thanks. ..I'm glad to hear there is a solution... I assume this kit would lock up sooner and keep the revs down while towing or puttin along... if so where can I get one ;)

I really appreciate the assistance! !!

i would use the silver spring that comes in the kit. royal distributing used to sell it in canada. kits pop up on ebay but you should be able to get it from your dealer through motovan or kimpex.

Thanks a million... just to be clear that kit lowers cruise RPM and lowers lockup RPM as well?

edit;
I just did an online chat with Royal...they have no idea how to do it, saying all there kits increase rpm at takeoff and are performance orientated... :(

they are not showing heel clickers at royal anymore. with heel clickers, your engagement probably will go up but as they grab the belt harder than stock, your cruise rpm should come down.

You can play with primary springs/weights to get a lower RPM engagement BUT then you should probably need to play with gearing (would need a overall lower final gear ratio). As with lower engagement you engine isnt into the rpm range for making the power you need to haul sled(basically like trying to take off in 2nd/3rd gear) Lowering your overall GR can be acheived by A. Smaller top gear (drive gear) B. Larger bottom gear (driven gear) or combo of the two. Wish I could give examples but not sure to where to tell you to start.
