Hi. 1st year having to change out my chaincase oil on my 2000 Yamaha 600 triple SXR sled. Need to know how to change it out please. I read something about 10MM bolt that drains the oil out. Where is that located? Once completely drained how do i fill it up? how do i know how much to put in? What type of chaincase oil does Yamaha prefer on an older sled like this?
thanks

The bolt is located on the inside of the tunnel and it needs a 12mm wrench to take it out. It's located just under the drive axle and it has a washer with a rubber seal on it.As far as refill amount it depends on whether you have reverse or not, standard chaincase is something like 250ml with the reverse one needing around 50ml more. The oil is just gear oil API “GL-3” SAE #75 or #80 but there are some lighter oils out there that will work just as well. Most major oil brands carry a synthetic chaincase oil,I use Amsoil, and some guys will use synthetic transmission fluid.Lighter oil will flow better with less drag and protects just as well.

Hi. Thank for email back. I'm still having a hard time finding that drain plug bolt. Do you have a pic what it looks like? Underneath chaincase on front part there is a bolt there but i didn't see a washer.

it is inside the tunnel (where your track is) on the backside of the chaincase. It is not under the hood.

Tried to attach a pic of the inside of the tunnel showing where the bolt is but it's pretty easy to find, just below the drive axle.

Once you have drained it pull the cover and get a look see in there. Can or two of carb or brake cleaner will get the crud out that wont drain on its own. I use synthetic ATF as well. If you dont want to go ATF then I recomend a chain case oil versus gear lube......after all...its a chaincase!

Unless the viper/sxr has a different chain case and dip stick, the reverse level is lower than the std mark. My mm dip stick has both marks, I run the oil between both of them.

Mine does too but the reverse outer case half is deeper accounting for the extra fluid needed. It isn't much extra buy it does take a bit more.Backwoods M Max said:Unless the viper/sxr has a different chain case and dip stick, the reverse level is lower than the std mark. In addition to what everyone said above:
Pull the dipstick and fill thru the dipstick hole.kbarczak said:... how do i fill it up?
Use the dipstick to keep checking the level as you fill.kbarczak said:how do i know how much to put in?
