What are the relative strengths & weaknesses between the later Mountain Max and SRX Mountain? I'm thinking of buying one or the other.

OK, but which is better, and how?

2000 and newer MM is better because the track angle of attack was changed in 2000.

I suppose the SRX is more powerful, how do they compare weight wise? The attack angle makes the newer MM better than the SRX in deep snow? How about suspension?

I LOVE the SRX (non mtn version) I think 98 was only year for mtn srx (My least favorite year of srx) Myself making the choice for actually mtn/powder riding woould be the newer Mtn max. Unsure if/when they were upgraded to hotter stator & dual bulb.

go with the mm i have both. Srx are higher maintenance power valves being number one. 136 inch track versus 141 for mm. a lot more travel on back end of mm . Srx mountain are nice to see but no where near the mountain machine that
the mm is. With a few easy mods you'll have a reliable unit that's decent in the pow.

One other question, what is the range like on the mm? My old vmax always runs out long before any one else, and i don't like that.

If your're clutched, geared and jetted properly, you'll be the last one looking for fuel.

If your speaking of the vmax 500 in your profile(twin) just about any tripple will get ALOT better mileage. Twins are gas PIGS!

Yeah don't I know it! How are the triples for starting? My BIL says his friends had an SRX that was a beast to start.

Redhead (mtn max/vmax/sx) aint usually to bad, seems like 01 went to a larger diameter wheel in the recoil making it even easier to pull(not usually that hard to begin with). I have read horror stories about hard starting SRX's but havent had any myself (have owned 6 last 4 years still have 4 of them). After carb cleaning I give each cylinder a snort of fuel rather than 10-15 pulls. Just picked up an 04 viper and thats EZ....just turn the key!
