This was the wife's sled, she said after one ride she wanted to start riding.. long story short she rode it once so it turned into a "loaner" sled and now I have a 15 year old sled with over 5000 miles and a hole in one of the pistons which isn't really worth fixing, so I guess it is time to part it out.
The ohlin shocks and the new-ish plastic skis were the first to go. Is there anything else worth saving/parting on this or for the most part is it scrap heap fodder?
Hood is nice but seems like it would be a PITA to ship so I think it will make some cool garage art.

Why not fix it. I have everything you would need.
Red heads are vary easy to work on and parts are well priced but gotta find out y it blew up. There was a reason for it. When I blew mine up it was do to not cleaning carbs and it did not hurt the cylinder. I have 4 of them gotta love them red heads.

Well just the sled is red, I think by "red head" you guys mean the 700 triples. (my 98 is a "red head".) This one is a 600 twin. Not sure what exactly was wrong with this one but it would always bend the spark plug ground strap into the electrode. Swap out the plug and you could ride it all day. Last time it happened I found pieces of piston embedded in the plug.
This thing had a long hard life, and its time for it to go to the poker run in the sky.

OK I thought it was a triple drop one in you u will have a great ride easy swap to do.

Melting the ground strap = too lean

to lean = burn down/hole in piston.

bending the ground strap on a twin, I would guess the piston skirt started to fall apart.

I do do love my 700 triple, it has low miles (for its age - 2500) so it will be around for quite a while. I don't have room or even a need for a 2nd sled (son is not quite 8 months old so it'll be a good bit before he can ride it!) so repairing isn't an option. Plus I am knee deep in restoring a 68 GTO convertible at the moment.

have you thought about what would be a fair price for whats left of the sled as is, including the hood?
i have the same sled and its "cosmetically challenged" and i have no problem driving to hermiston and picking up your carcass, price dependent.
let me know and we can negotiate any details.

My bad I miss read. I thought the plug just disitagrated. Well if the groud strap would get bent..... You should of stopped riding it and re built, isn't that a indication of bad bearings?Devilin AblueDress! said:to lean = burn down/hole in piston.
