Finally got some spare time and started working on the SRX 440 E.
I tried to start it earlier this winter but it only ran on 1 cylinder. Took the head and cylinders of and found out that the piston ring on the mag side was sticking.
I am pretty shure there have ben done some upgrades on the engine on this sled before i bought it from US, but how can I find out what have been done?
What is the hoose nipple in pic 1181, there was no hoose on, and what is the plastic cap for down right in the picture?

The nipple is a vent for the gear case which should have a short piece of hose to prevent clogging. The plastic plug is for gear oil. Here are two good posts you should read.

Could you give the Vin# on the Rt. side of the tunnel or above the water pump assembly on the engine ? http://www.vintagevmax.com/vvforum3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=585

Took the pistons ofte the Engine yesterday. The piston with the sticking ring Was oem yamaha, the other was not oem, it had #09-8023 printet on the inside. Does anyone know what brand it is? This piston also had a meltdown on the exhaust side down to the pistonring.
I have ordered 2 new pistons, bought gasket set and oem pistonrings on ebay.
Waiting on a frend of mine who owns a clutchpuller to the Comet 102c to stop by. Then I Will take the engine out of the sled and check cranck shaft bearings.
I have had the cylinders and head in the ultrasonic washer, so they are cleen and ready to be reassembled.
Is there anything I need to check ore do with this engine before i put it back in the sled?

thats a aftermarket piston. wiesco never made pistons for the 81 srx, so my guess parts unlimted. and the meltdown the way you described was probley a lean burndown. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Good luck finding them. They have been discontinued along with the gearcase bearing.
Don't wing it on these engines. Make sure everything is right top to bottom and they are fairly dependable rockets. Wrong and it won't last one run.

The crankshaft is in bad shape, need new bearings and 1 rod bearing. The mag side of the shaft looks like a bearing have spun on the crankshaft. Anyone have a crankshaft inn good shape for sale? Does the Vmax 540 crank fit in the Srx 440E engine case?

I have the seal for that sled, if you need the crank rebuilt we can do that too.

I went to a friend of mine that used to dragrace Vmax 540, phazer 480 and Ex 570 in the 80's an 90's. I bought 2 vmax engines,( crankcase and crankshafts) 9 cylinders some ported for dragrace only some of them ok and some not ok. Some need new sleeves. 5 piston heads, 3 crankshafts, 5 rotor assembly, 3 stator assembly, 1 taillight, rear bumper cover an some other stuff I don't remember. So i think I will build a "new" engine to my SRX 440 E.
I will use the Vmax crank and crankcases, waterpump, the bottom half of the emgine will be a Vmax 540. Annd I will use the Srx440 E cylinders, head, exhaust and carbs. Is this a good idea ? Is there anyone that have done the same to their sled?
Any ideas from you experts will be great.
I have started washing all the parts that I bought in my ultrasonic washer so they are cleen and nice when I put them in the shelf. Rebuilding the engine will start out in next week.

use the vmax carbs also, the srx butterfly carbs were not so great no way to tune the mid range in them effectively.

OK, thank you. Bought a set of carbs on ebay today. Have to wait 2-3 weeks before them arrive at my place here in Norway.
