Are there any good sites anyone knows to find a used dirt bike for my sisters boy. He's 11 and never had a bike before so looking more for a play bike. RT 100, XR80, XR100... ebay & craigs list are obvious. We live in Northern IL.

At 11 hes gona be growing quick and will grow out of a small bike like that very quick. I would recommend a ttr/drz/klx 125. These bikes have very smooth engines and easy to use clutches. They are also more available and cheap. That being said I would buy local where the bike can be looked over and test drove. If you are buying online such as on ebay first look at the sellers feedback to see if he/she is trustworthy in their descriptions. How much was ya lookin to pay?

Got him the bike this week. We looked at a TTR 125 first. Way to big. Our family is vertically impaired He is 4'8" and maybe 75 pounds. We found a nice 83 XR80 from Craigs list. He received it Saturday Morning. He can just bearly tip toe touch on both feet. Fits him well. I thought he was going to break his face smiling ear to ear. It was totally unexpected for him. Great day!

Vmax540 said:Yes, he will grow quickly.... so, buy him a bike that he can just barely touch while on his tip toe's. As much as I like my Yamaha sleds and street bikes none of the other brands compare in reliability to the Honda line up. CRF150F.....
Everyone around here has wr/yz 450s and 250s Never been a break down. I do completely trust that honda is probably just as reliable but the yamahas are familiar to me.

My son's present bike a 2007 WR250F has 4 times as many hours as 2 of his friends Honda's and never ever been apart but,.... then he tries to change the oil every 2 hours, runs filter skins and cleans the air filter at least weekly. Sorry, I have seen too much to agree on the air cooled Yamaha's being in the same league as the Honda's.
Below his WR being babied....

oil every 2 hours?!? the manual calls for every 1000km (probably 15-20 hours). That must get pricey lol. Anyways.. I have no experience with the air cooled bikes but the 5 valved bikes have been rock solid for us. In the pic the black yz450f is my buddys who owned a crf before which he never had a problem with.

Harescrambles....2 hours of rolling clouds of dust, mud packed radiators/engines with temps from the winter to the heat of summer. Six years from a high of 26 races in one a year and not to mention his weekly riding/training considering not even one valve adjustment has been necessary is a testament to frequent oil changes. I just wish it had an hour meter from new but, then H.S. are 2 hours long. I have personally seen Honda's with less than 50 hours needing new valves.

Now I understand why you called it the OL XR. My typo or temporary loss of coherency. Yes it is an "03" I love the other pics. Got my 1st Yamaha 60 when I was 8. One the most memorable days of my life.
