I titled this post backwards. I have a 2002 Viper and a spare electric start kit (from a parts sled). Will I have any regrets if I install the e-start? For example, is the ~20 lb weight gain noticeable on the trails? I'm already planning to add a reverse kit, which will add 10 pounds (estimated). Reverse is a no-brainer IMO but the e-start seems a bit superfluous.

I find the e start one of the best mods i got, I hated pulling that thing over all day. I put e start and reverse on every sled i got. I noticed no change in any way with riding. Unless your in the MTN's riding deep powder i cant imagine you would be able to tell the difference with our without but my shoulder sure does after a long day of riding. Plus your coat doesnt get dirty from the starter rope anymore! Added bonus!! IMO put it on and enjoy!!

Pulling all day as in stop - start. Mine always start in one pull but why do if you don't have too. Not sure where your getting 20lbs but to each their own, I like mine!

Super1c, the Viper ER is listed at ~30 pounds heavier than a standard Viper so thats how I was estimating 10 for reverse and 20 for the e-start. I assume dry weight includes the battery. I'll weigh these parts individually soon but for reference, my old Vmax battery weighed 15 lbs by itself.

Sorry if weight comment came across as directed towards you, it was not. But you are right about the weight I forgot about battery. Either way I still vote for e start.

I added it my S. My blue is a factory ER so already had the luxury. I just put lightweight batteries in both mine. YTX-9BS IIRC...

If you can't pull it over, then you can't ride it. That's the rule around here.

OA, that's easy to say but e-start did save me once last year when my cord broke.
I think I'll leave it off for now but I'll keep it for future use. Yamaha's seem pretty easy to start as long as their carbs are clean.
P.S. YTX9-BS is a small battery, I just had to buy one for a 4-wheeler.

i have found that now that my group of riding buddies all have e-start, we all shut them off more often cause there easier to start. so many times we have stopped at an intersection and you are trying to decide where to go and look at a map and the sleds are running and you cant hear anything. plus the smoke and smell. when you stop for a piss brake all the sleds are off so you can hear other people coming down the trail and allows you to get it rolled back in. plus you save on gas! one guys goes out in the morning and starts all the sleds in about 1 minute. same way at bars, first guy out starts all the sleds. e start all the way, no brainer IMO.

For a 2002 Viper, are the electric start and reverse kits readily available? If so where is the best place to buy them? What am I looking at in terms of cost? What type of labor is involved with installing both kits?
Thanks,
Zack

At one time the E-start was available as a kit from Yamaha but I've heard one or two of the parts have been discontinued. The parts should be easy to find on the used market though, and AFAIK you can use an e-start from the V-max, etc. Reverse from a V-Max will swap too, I've heard, but the factory gearing will be lower (slower). Cost = ??? The e-start kit from Yamaha used to be around $500.
