Hello from Alaska! I just picked up a '99 Yamaha Vmax 600 triple with only 700 miles on it for $800 and I am getting it ready for the upcoming winter. The sled seems almost new and runs perfectly. Everything appears to be stock.

However, the rear suspension is horrible! Most noticeably, the sled sits really low to the ground. Being in Alaska, I tend to run in snow at least a good 3-4 feet deep, so I have a feeling this is going to be a problem.

I searched little and found some "Drop Bracket Kits" but they all note "96" as the latest year they will work on... Can anyone tell me where I can find a ready-made kit for the 99 with 2.5" to 3.5" drop?

Also, any other suggestions for a cheap suspension upgrade I should look into?

Thanks!

Is it a vmax sx 600? Is it blue?
You will more than likely have to put on heavier rivets, as it likes to overrev.
That sled does sit low. The problem, I can Imagine, if you just drop the rear suspension at the rear mount, is that you might get a ski pressure out of this world?

Yes, blue 600, I believe it is the SX.

Unfortunately, I just can't find a pre-made "drop kit" for 97+ to buy anywhere. I can always fab up some on my own, but I would prefer not to.

pretty sure you can easily long travel it to lift it some too, mine sits about 21-22" with no drop brackets

I am still pretty new to these things... Can you please explain a little bit more? What is involved in adding travel? Any pictures of your machine?

Wider skis will make a big difference in the deep stuff. I have a 97 sx, stock height and it does really good in deep snow with the 5 1/2" plastic skis. A good track is very important too, you gotta get that thing to ride up on top of the snow!

Just putting drop brackets on is not gonna do anything will make it not ride right on top of snow will make it plow more than anything suspension was put in a place for a reason move everything or nothing

I have stock yamaha oem drop bracketts brand new in package if interested. Decided to go m10 in my 01 srx. Have a 99 with the bracketts in viper arms and spindles and shocks with a 6 in riser apex bars lil tippy in corners but makes it a lil more fun

if your going off trail, put a 136 or longer track on it in 1 1/2in deep, remove the guards, add a skid plate, wider skis and xtc/xt/sxr/or viper shocks and straps. drop brackets are a poor fix for a short lug, short length, low travel, small skied sled in the snow. That sled is a trail sled, and a dam good one.
below is alot of reading on the skid as well as some updates on the ski

Id advise against the drop on these sleds, like norwegian said it will make ski pressure horrific. These proaction sleds were set up with more with more than normal ski pressure from the factory (hence some of the darting issues)

But this also makes them one of the best handling trail sleds out there, I still havent found anyone with another make of sled that can keep up on the trails. (Poo's are close) For a good trail sled a stock pro action chassis setup correctly is hard to beat.

If you want a good deep snow set up Id go with the Viper front suspension. As for the rear, forget brackets and find yourself a 136" M-10 or sc-10 and take out the stock Yamaha skid.

Its more work for sure, but the results will be night and day.
