posting this for a friend... she's got a 99 Phazer with a blown motor. I'm pretty sure that 485 fan cooled motor has been unchanged (for the most part) throughout the years. Can we "drop in" any Phazer motor? Also, IF she wanted some more power, what else could we "drop in"?

No you cannot. I believe the cases changed, along with the motor mounts on the trailing arm Phazers. The wiring harness changed at some point too. I dont remember all the details but I checked into the same thing a few years ago. Im sure someone else can chime in and give you specifics. This is only what my feeble mind can remember.

Blown beyond simply doing a top end rebuild? I'm pretty sure the cylinders and heads went unchanged on the 485... Kind of makes me wonder if you can get the 540 jugs to fit the case...

As said traling arm Phazer bottom ends are different from earlier Phazers and parts won't interchange. Cylinders/pistons and some crank components will. 540 engines are in a different family and parts are not compatable with the 485.
The 485 was built using the old 433 engines as a base in design. The 540 and 437 (SS440) engines will interchange between each other as they are of the same base.
