I'm considering buying a Tacoma crew cab, and was wondering if any TYers have experiance with the towing capabilities of the truck. I currently have a two place enclosed trailer so no biggie, but was wondering if the 6500 lb. rating is acuurate, etc., as I would like to get a bigger trailer down the road
Thanks,

Well my Ranger, which is considerably smaller than the new Tacoma, used to pull a 2 place with two sleds on it plus one in the bed just fine before I put the 33's on it. My Dakota has the same rating as the Tacoma and pulls a steel tandem axel utility trailer with a ton and a half of gravel just fine as well. Granted the Dakota is a 2wd V8 with a 5-speed.

If you are buying a brand new Taco, set it up for towing (tow package, lower gears etc...) and have at it. They are pretty tough "little" trucks.

I had an older model (2001) tacoma extended cab with the 3.4 L. It towed a 2 place open trailer with no issues with 2 sleds and a load of gear. One time I pulled a full load of firewood down to the bumpstops, and a trailer FULL of lumber about 300 miles. Not ideal, I know, but it did it and still got 13 mpg. I would think the 'bigger' taco would have no problems with the 4.0. I think the old truck was rated for 5000 lbs towing. You'd be fine for the majority of the time, unless you're pulling a lot of hills.
