Is the 2002 700 srx a good motor? What should compression readings be?

Alot of compression testers will give different numbers, most important that all 3 cylinders read about the same.

Yea, the pre-2000's had the crank issues.

I've heard there is some issue with 2002 motor cutting power down if it leans out or runs hot or something?

That sled has DCS, it will pull timing if it senses detonation (very bad for engine) and save the motor from melting holes in pistons (very good for engine). You will not find a better 2-stroke motor from any manufacturer, save maybe the red head 700.

And it was just the 98's with some crank problems, which should have been taken care of by Yamaha.
